Is there progression in freeskiing?

It may seem like an obvious assumption to make that freeskiing is in a general sense progressing. If it is so linear as western culture generously ascribes to many things from science to civilization to freeskiing then where is it going, will it reach a zenith, will it die or never end but always progress? By progressing i would like to look at tricks, style, and new ways of looking at a feature. Also, personally i would like to ask weather it would be valueable to look at skiing from an non linear lens? I am wondering weather the narrative of progress that you can see across the sport is narrowing our ideas of what skiing can be and/or is? If you share these feelings or object to my assumptions please post your ideas and use examples if possible to support them.

The potential for progression in skiing is very great, but still finite.

As we begin to creep toward the theoretical ceiling of technical trick progression, I believe that a majority of the progression will be in diversifying the ways we look at features and the ways we do tricks. A wide range of developing styles will define progression in skiing as the highest levels of trick progression become more and more difficult as well as dangerous. Look at skateboarding- is the sport still progressing? Skating has been around for significantly longer than freestyle skiing and we can still see progression in the sport all the time, even though progression in the scale of technical trick progression may have slowed down.

yes i agree it is very easy to see progress in tricks and their difficulty. I think that once skiing reaches a critical point your value as a skier will not be dependent upon ability to do huge technical tricks but your style and deviation from traditional ideas. But what about style? I think personally i can see just as much steeze in the ski movies of 7 years ago then that which exist now, it seems more that style has embraced a different idea instead of a better idea. So maybe this could be evidence for something that falls outside the narrative of progression. Oh and to respond to the replies that consisted of people criticizing my thread i have...nothing to say, i guess it doesn't really surprise me.

yes there is, people will always progress with their style and i dont think there will be someone who can do every possible trick with every grab / every possible rail

i could say its all relative, but that would be a cop out. i think the physical side of progression can reach a limit, you can only land so big or pull so many G's spinning and flipping before your body can take anymore. the progress you are talking about comes with a mindset, technically the number of things you can do on skis is infinite thus progression in that sense will never die, but i think think combinations of terrain and styles will never stop expanding, no matter how small or big people are going there is room for some form of growth.

Finals are next week. Don't worry measuring progression or style. If you're not in a comp there is no reason to try to figure out any sort of objective measure. Figure out your own personal fun-o-meter and how to max it out.

More and more skiers are able to throw down like never before. With so many dub corks and super duper feds the thing that always sets one apart is there style... personally i don't think there is an roof on steeze
