So I am new to the NS game and relatively new to freeskiing culture in general. There are many aspects that I think are great. The fact that freeskiing evolved from the desire to create a non-conforming counterculture is super rad. The interaction and commitment to this online community that includes pros, brands, photographers, random industry people and skiers from all over the world seems to be really unique. It seems that most embrace the carefree, live life to the fullest mentality, emphasis on personal style and the shunning of nitpicky rules, which is really refreshing.
I have tapped into NS to stay up on what's happening in the industry. While perusing, I've noticed something that seems very odd to me and I am hoping for some enlightenment.
I have noticed a heavy influence of Black American and Jamaican culture in much of the style, music, lingo and general vibe of the freeskiing culture. This is cool, black culture has many really dope elements that are very worthy of emulation. At the same time, I find myself often reading threads and comments that are littered with racism, whether it be overt or covert. Sometimes it is by the same people that are very obviously "embracing" black culture.
Please don't read this wrong and feel that I am saying the majority of NSers are doing this, I am not... I just see it happening pretty frequently and I'm surprised these people are not called out more. I would love to know some of your thoughts on why this is, and if anyone else sees this as problematic.
... I have attached some examples.
This guy "Frenchy" makes constant outwardly racist comments, here is one. "Boomie" agrees with him.
He then posts a pic of himself throwing up the 'Wu-Tang' symbol. (maybe he doesn't know its Wu-Tang?)
Nope! He knows.
Peep the signature. Yes, I know it's a South Park reference.
In a thread about whether or not America is the best country. These pics were all the same post... Please note the closing caption and up-votes. "If those don't bring a tear of joy to your eye gtfo of our glorious country."
