This past weekend I had the opportunity to take photos at Phatman's Mucho Jib Jam at Kissing Bridge(WNY). It was awesome. I have never really had the chance to take pictures with a DSLR camera, but I got to! Here are a few of what I think are the best photos I got.

Obviously these aren't great, but I'm hoping to get better with working with cameras, photoshop/editing, and other stuff in the next few years. Any advice/ feedback would really be appreciated(both positive and negative) as I start to get into photography more!

I'm also hoping this thread could be used for those who are new to photography/ videography to post their work and get constructive feedback!

Hey welcome to the game! I take a lot of photos as well and would love to help you out if you have any questions or if you want a critiquing partner! It can be tough putting yourself and your work out there and it can be an extra challenge to try and take successful actions photos.

A lot of these shots are great for your first time out there! Do you have any editing software? I've noticed especially with busy back grounds like this one (when you're at an event and a ton of people take up the background or it's not the most attractive) that opening up your aperture ( going to a lower number like 5.6, 1.8) helps you focus the attention on your subject rather than cluttering up the space with a crazy background.

Also, don't be afraid to get close! Sometimes the best shots you get are the ones where you're almost getting knocked over.

Thanks a ton! I had so much fun with it! I used iPhoto to crop and brighten some of the pictures haha. I took a photography class in high school and learned how to use photoshop. But I never had a camera to use(used my iPhone) so nothing good ever really came out of it. I mean, I learned some of the more advanced(?) features of photoshop but they aren't the same on iPhone quality pictures.

It sucked because I was really into the class at first. I was stoked to go out to the mountain and get some quality pictures. Our school has a class set of DSLR cameras, and I really wanted to learn how to use them. However, the teacher was new and didn't let us use them outside of class(and all of our projects were to be done outside of class). That was a bummer and basically ruined the class for me.

Anyways! I definitely want to try different angles next time. I think for getting close I'd rather wait till I'm with people I know aren't going to lose control and fall on me haha

I used my friends Canon Rebel T4i. He had a different lens on it. I honestly couldn't tell you what it was though haha.

aaaah I love photography! Haven't been shooting as much lately, but I used to get paid to photograph horse shows and rodeos. Yours look great, I'd try cropping them a little more so the rider is more of the focal point

I havn't done any photography outside skiing, i'd like to give it a go though! Did my knee early season 2 years ago and picked up a camera as a way to still feel like part of the community and I loved it. Here are a few of mine, any feed back would be awesome!

I use Adobe Photoshop but I mostly edit in Adobe Bridge. Your shots were great, I especially liked the last shot!

Kinda just a general question. What do most people look for in edits/photos? I mean, do people care more about what a skier is doing, or how it is captured? I personally like a solid mix of the two. But for other people, do you look more at the art behind it or the actual skiing?

Example, average filming with awesome skiing vs a professionally shot edit with average skiing?
Average photo of something super steezy/unique, or a solid photo with a simple trick?

How you capture it is just as important as what you are capturing. How you represent your subject is crucial to how someone will react to an image. And that's a lot easier said then done. More times than not I look back at a picture and regret not capturing an angle I see only after the fact. That also has to deal with the difference between filming and photographing. What may be attractive on film may not transfer to a photo. It's a lot easier to make someone look awkward and unattractive caught in a still shot of some crazy maneuver than to watch that on film a thousand times where it looks amazing. Sometimes the simpler tricks look more attractive in a photo. And no matter how many times you do it in a row, if I'm only getting photos of your butt, more likely than not they're not gonna make a cut.
