Hello every I was just wondering if it's possible to add pounds (or whatever is the term) of boost to my gti turbo? It's a 1.8t but I'm not sure if you can add more to the turbo since it came with the car? If so how difficult is it? Thanks.
Real Answer: it IS possible to do. You have to get a manual boost controller, flash your ECU, yada yada yada. If you have an 2002 or newer you have a K03 and stock run around 13psi. You can technically go up to 14.7ish with some reprogramming. Not really recommended with a stock turbo and stock internals but it can be done.
So you want more HP? I would look into basic bolt on mods like a cold air intake, full exhaust (including downpipe), all intercooler piping, manual/electronic boost controller, intercooler, blow off/diverter, and then a protune/etune.
Basically what this will do is free up the flow of cold air and exhaust in your car which "lets the car breathe". You will get some big gains out of these basic parts. Big turbo will lead to more problems then you want to deal with a daily driver. (also be prepared to drop over 10 grand if you blow a motor/transmission/turbo in that case)
Other than that do the basics and you won't be dissapointed!

Most of these parts ( I.e the blowoff valve and cold air intake) are useless and a waste of money until it properly tuned.

Tune first, then consider buying stuff like this
did you read the end? I said get all these parts then tune... How can you tune without having the parts that you are tuning to benefit your car? I.e CAI, HFC/TP, and exhaust/DP...
Ill phrase it this way. Get tuned after every major part you put on.

yes, i did read the end.
You can tune your car without having all of those parts. You can still all advertised gains from it because no parts are mandatory with a stage 1 tune. just recommended. I would tune first, see how much extra power i was running, and then choose extras based on that.
If you're thinking about going above to stage 2 and 3, then sure - get you're car ready for that first. (i.e high flow fuel pump / down pipe / exhaust / etc.
Still, i don't think i would ever put an intake on my GTI because its just not really any difference for a lot of money. its better spent elsewhere.
AND HERE WE GO. was going to say inb4 "STAGE" bros but too late...
sure a "stage 1" tune would give gains but you really do need to let the car breathe. CAI can add up to 50whp on some cars. (Not sure on GTI) So why not pair that with an acessport? Get the most out of the "stage" tune.
Also "stage" tunes are garbage. I don't know what OP's cash flow is like so i can't recommend more than bolt-ons and "stage" tune for now.
Just go get a GIAC or equivalent flash tune and maybe a down pipe/exhaust. That will probably satiate you for a while/diminish your funds. Next would be a k04 turbo and that's a substatial amount of money for not a huge gain over a good stock turbo tune with an exhaust. Bleed valves don't really work so well on 1.8t cause the ecu cuts timing for safety.
Tuning the 1.8t is extremely well documented on the internet, and the vw tuning forums are extremely helpful in comparison to NS. VwVortex is a good example.

VW's have a substantial safety factors as the turbos were mostly incorporated for higher efficiency with low idle emissions. Substantial gains can be had just by telling the N75 valve (stock electronic boost control) to stay shut until higher intake pressures and flow will still be pretty good with stock parts.

youre such a scrub. you clearly know fuck all about this so quit talking like you do, you just look like a fool.

Lol CAIs don't add much HP at all and you clearly have no idea what's going on
Wow this thread is super helpful with all these contradicting statements.
Me? I wouldn't waste a dime on a tune until my bolt-ons are installed. Yeah you can drop a couple hundo and get a tune before hand for a few extra hp but thats retarded.
Here's what you do. Save your money, buy all the bolt ons you want at once, install, then tune. At least thats how you should do it.
Also, vw vortex is good if you google first and explore the site, but there are A LOT of older members who are literally zero help. That site used to be sick but now it blows.
Granite_StateHere's what you do. Save your money, buy all the bolt ons you want at once, install, then tune. At least thats how you should do it.
Yo, you'd be right if one were doing a custom tune. For the 1.8t the only time people really do custom tunes is when going over the 400hp range because the flash tunes offered in vw world present awesome gains per dollars spent. Mk4 intakes are pretty good (also they are already CAI). The only real restriction on the stock turbo with a stage 1 is the downpipe.
The only bolt-ons you should be looking at with a stock turbo tune are a downpipe and maybe a exhaust and intercooler if you have the cash.
Davinhttp://www.amsperformance.com/cart/AMS-Mitsubishi-Lancer-Evolution-Evo-10-Performance-Intake-Polished.html here you go bud! Same as I have on my car. So I guess they are lieing about their products??
alright, i can post a link to a cai for my car http://store.newlevelmotorsports.com/incoairin00n.html. injen claims it adds hp but the reality is it sits behind the radiator, sucks in hot air and effectively lowers hp from stock airbox.
so in short it is not unheard of for someone to "lie" about their product in the advertising. i'm assuming you have dyno results from before and after to back up your claims?

Haha no. I got a pro-tune done after I installed all bolt ons that I bought. Multiple parts and a huge gain.
So in short, why are you trying to assert your knowledge? I am giving advice to someone and obviously since we are talking cars someone has to know more...

The car was already running 21 pounds of boost with a boost controller, they still dont do much especially hooked up to a ko3 or ko4 on stock psi

you said that something has to be true because it said so on the internet. my point was that's not the case.

Do you even know VW's???
Im not sure what "a few" extra HP is to you... but an extra 52 horses requires absolutely zero bolt on's with APR. (At least for the 2.0, I'm not sure how the gains apply to the 1.8)
Bolt ons are an extreme waste of money for a quick stage tune.

How long have you even been in the VW game? I've had my VR for almost 4 years now, I think I know a little about VW's...
A stage 1 tune for a VR nets you about 15hp. That is why I think they are pointless. It may be more for a FI vehicle but 52 seems way out there, even for the larger motor on the 2.0t.
A turbocharger is sucking in, as hard as it's pushing out. It's grade 1 physics. Therefore it will make very little difference if you have a restrictive intake or one that is more free.
A free intake on a turbo car, will help the turbo spool up faster. because well, there's less restriction. It will make a tiny bit more power at a lower RPM, but once it's full boost, it's all the same.
The benefit is less turbo lag, not really more power.
The only exception would be if for some reason your intake is so restrictive that the turbo can't pull hard enough to achieve the desired boost.
Also, the internal temperature of a turbo is over 1200 degrees F!!! That's hot as fuck! so the "cold air" you brought in, is now passing through something literally red hot, that once the air reaches the engine, it's so hot that it makes no difference how hot or cold the air coming into the intake was. Which is why intercoolers were invented and actually work. Cool the air, after the turbo, before the engine.
Advertisement claims ? Well i've been taking these pills that claim to increase my penis size 3 inches. It hasn't happened yet. Just like your intake isn't make you any more power.

Exactly most people go full front mount with an intake and it works but just an intake with a stock intercooler I feel won't do much
OP, if you have to ask, you are not informed enough to do it reliably. So until then, go to vwvortex.com, technical forums, 1.8t engine, and start reading for months. Then, never come to NS again for technical car advice.
technical forums like vwvortex can be equally awful and mis-informed.
they just spew out information they have read from other users as if it were some sort of bible of righteous knowledge that only they know. Most users on those forums barely can pick up a wrench, let alone work on their car.
APR and GIAC etc etc tunes do not come without a price, they put massive wear on engines in the process of producing more HP without any real sort of improved supporting mods. I have seen many 2.0T cars with issues from running a chip.
I worked for Volkswagen/Porsche for 5 years and currently work for Bentley. I cannot tell how bad vortex users could be with their mis-informed bullshit coming in the doors.
I have worked for VAG my entire career... I know a thing or 2.
If you want a fast car that you can count on to get to home every single day, buy a stock fast car... that is really the only solution. Most modified cars will leave you stranded from time to time, and if you can live with that... Go nuts. You can get lucky and have a rock solid stud of a car that can be modified and get you around every single day but that time will come.
My suggestion to you is to keep the money in your pocket and drive the car in its stock form and put away money that you were going to spend and just purchase a faster car/ better platform in the first place. Seems a bit bland and boring but honestly... VW's are kind of shit to modify... they are not particularly good at anything other than being "hellaflush" or "stanced". Save for a couple of years and buy a real sports car instead of an economy car with bells and whistles.
And that Redneck kid was right, Volkswagens are hipster cars..... They should just rename the brand Bandwagen to be honest. They make nice cars in their stock form, but the aftermarket culture for VW is the worst out there without a doubt. They literally enjoy making their car's into rolling jokes with airbag suspension and rotiform wheels or BBS replicas.
I can feel I have rustled the jimmies of a good portion of ns'ers.

Vortex sucks. Good info is rare nowadays.
Imo tune without supporting mods is silly. I done in here, plenty of misinformation floating around.

It is literally THE WORST brand for that shit. Flannel , handlebar mustaches and hats with their brims flexed upwards.... just a bunch of trendbros. BETTER PUT A ROOFBASKET ON MY GOLF for all the hauling I do with a car that cannot even go up an angled driveway.
It is worse than ISIS.
I was at SEMA last week and I wanted to rage so much I smoked half a pack of cigs in 6 hours.
