schweitzerskiierJust started my freshmen year of high school and am currently taking band. I have played bass clarinet since 7th grade and am pretty good but lately this year I've been starting to lose my stoke for it. I have a great teacher, but the kids in my class are annoying as hell and none of my friends take the same class. Basically the only reason I'm sticking with it is because of the benefits band has on a college application, etc. Just wondering if anybody on NS has been in the same situation or experienced the benefits of band in their later years.
WPochOP I was in the literally same position as you when I was in 7th grade. I played the bass clarinet up until freshmen year but dropped it sophomore because I just didn't like it. I did it my frosh year because my school requires an art credit to pass and band counts as one. It was also a easy 100.
I stopped doing it because it was to time consuming. The teacher would make me stay after to perfect a piece, I would need to come in during precious study time during school, and The concerts were awful. Plus the kids in it were not part of my friend group except for like 2 who I talked to. Also the taste of the instrument was awful after 11 years of unwashed bass clarinet juice in my mouth
gapersarefriendsin my opinion doing something just for college apps is the dumbest shit on earth. if you're not enjoying it, then quit
Mr.BishopNEVER!!!!!
Playing instruments was one of the greatest things I ever did in my life. Sure, maybe you go through a phase where band is lame as fuck... but you should take the musical experience you have and apply it somewhere else. Join/start a band of your own. With how fucking wild and experimental music is these days whatever the fuck you play mixed with some drum machines, synths and effects could be dope as fuck.
The thing that is key about band is learning to play with other people.
There is no synergy on this earth that matches the feeling of jamming with other musicians. When you can lock that shit in, its incredible.
Band helps you get the mechanics, but you need to take it from there.
conchetlerthis so much
i was in the same boat you were in when i was a freshman in high school, and i am so glad i kept with it. music started becoming more prominent in my life than it had before, and i taught myself to play guitar out of it..and now music is my favorite thing besides skiing to invest my time in (girls think its neat too) now that im in college im considering minoring in music, and i have no idea what my life would be like if i had stopped band.
in the end its up to you, but i would def stay if i were you...i ended up really liking it by the end of senior year

Mr.BishopEver played a gig with a band?
Greatest feeling on earth. Of course... unless you totally bomb, which happens but man when you crush it there is absolutely nothing like it.

ericjarvizAll the shit they tell you helps on college applications, doesn't help at all. Unless you're a minority you're most likely not getting shit. Do it if you enjoy it, if not, don't let them convince you it's worth anything other than your enjoyment. Coming from a TON of experience.
BaginaKenny G was in band and he slays p00n daily.

lIllIHow many kids have quit something as beautiful and constructive as playing an instrument simply because they disliked the learning environment?
Go ahead and quit band if you're not feeling it, but don't quit the instrument. I quit violin after 7 years when I was in middle school (because the class sucked) and I regret it every day.
Playing an instrument is one of the most valuable skills you can have. It probably won't get you into colleges, or make you any money, and if you're any good you'll spend a lot of time alone playing in your room rather than going out and partying in college, but believe me when I say that it will save your life.
*DUMBCAN*If you're doing something purely because college then drop it and take up something you do enjoy. Unless you're going for Harvard (and even then) it probably won't matter shit. Even if they bring it up in interviews then just say you like variety or something along those lines, anything positive rather than 'ugh. I got bored of it.'.
