X Games adds video-game tournament

Aspen Winter X Games adds video-game tournament to its menu...


In my personal opinion this is some bullshit, X Games has always been about a competition compiled of the greatest winter action sport athletes from around the world competing in what used to be the most progressive comp in our sport. The last thing this needs to be is a bunch of button mashing, teabagging, basement junkies having there parents take them up there for something they have no business in. If you want to have a gaming convention in Aspen, go for it, good luck, but to come impede on something not event related to the roots of the event if pretty uncool.

The fuck?

I guess people who play competitive video games are pretty extreme but I have a hard time associating it with the x games


I've never found any kind of video game commentary/coverage very entertaining and I'll have to pass on this one unless I'm flipping channels and something about it peaks my interest

Didn't you know that video games are now classified as "extreme"? Mommies and and daddies don't want their kids actually jumping off stuff because they might get hurt...it's much safer to let them spend the day on the couch slamming RedBull and Mountain Dew while ordering dinner from Pizza Hut. I think someone over at ESPN got confused by which "extreme" they are going for. Yeah, video games are "extremely" boring and "extremely" lame and most of these kids suffer from "extreme" lack of a life but I feel like this really cheapens the games.

How does this shit even get considered? In order for a sport to be extreme, there has to be some risk of injury or even death.

In gaming the only risk is a serious case of nerd rage, maybe carpel tunnel.

Gaming isn't even a sport, much less and extreme sport.

I'd rather see the snowmo events leave than a counter strike tourney.

ESPN is getting rid of a lot of the fun competitions that the X Games used to have. Snowmobile best trick, all inline skating stuff.

I don't know who makes up the team that decides what events are in the Games, but I have a feeling they don't represent the target audience of the X Games.

well i think this is great, mainly because ski and snowboarding video games need help selling. and this is a great way to do it. all of your favorite companies that advertise through the game make more money and can provide you with better shit.

I played CS back in the day on a pretty high level, traveled for lan tourneys and the whole bit. While i respect gaming because it takes a shit load of dedication to make it to the top it's not really a sport in my opinion and I don't think it belongs in the same breath as the X games.

I work at Xbox and think this is the dumbest thing ever. These are two separate spaces and I doubt the gaming world gives a shit about slopestyle skiing or will even appreciate or watch it. Apples and Oranges in my eyes.

Willing to bet the XGames biz group probably needs to show more growth since their advertising dollars are likely plateauing with the current menu of events. eSports is blowing up right now and tons of ad budget are probably following. So the move is not surprising...
-Google and Amazon fight for Twitch, with Amazon eventually getting it for $1 Billion....BILLION!!
-Microsoft purchases Minecraft for $2.5 Billion...for one game IP
-5M+ PS4s and Xbox Ones sold WW with millions of PS3s and Xbox 360s still in heavy use.

Glass half full; hopefully they can utilize some of that new revenue to boost the event and give some more love to the athletes.

Future Prediction: ESPN will roll out separate eSports event.

i think every skier and snowboarder give x-games medal a huge value. it's like bigger than the olympics for some. and i too think that x-games is the most valued competition in extreme sports.

and what comes to the snowmobile events and the riders, they are fuckin crazy! 10x crazier than guys who play cs. just look:

it affects the XGames brand and makes it less legit of an event, thus affecting skiing in the long-term. ESPN shoulda just gave eSports their own event off the bat similar to the World Series of Poker.

Also think about it this way, if it does drive considerable amounts of new revenue to XGames and then it peels off to become its own event, XGames will be a less lucrative investment bc it will flat-line again. Then ESPN likely wont be able to justify spending tons of money to the "higher-ups" on the XGames unless they can fill the void left behind by eSports.

Anyone could get good at video games. Only a small few can reach an elite level in their sport to be able to compete at x games. To see a bunch of people who still live with their parents so they can be good at a video game get to compete in a competition meant for real athletes is a disgrace. Video games have no place in x games and never will.

X-Games hasn't been legit since they dropped legit extreme sports (dirt jumping, luge, inline skating stuff) and started selling crap at Wal-mart. While I hate the idea of them bringing video games into an extreme sports competition, I really don't care because I haven't cared about the X-games in years.

This isn't very worthy of a medal. Especially considering people actually have to put a lot of time and effort into most of these extreme sports. Plus some of this stuff takes some serious balls. Games like this isn't that great of an idea either because it will also convince younger kids that they can grow up to a professional video game player or something of the sort. Video games shouldn't be something of this magnitude.

They're just trying to raise the amount of people that watch it. This will be good in some ways because it'll increase the amount of people that'll watch the X games. With that said, gaming is no fucking sport lol, let alone an extreme one

I love gaming. I love being able to put myself into a virtual world and be someone else for a little, it's relaxing. There's an indescribable feeling of freedom there.

However, these two cannot be mixed. X-games athletes risk their lives, they work harder than anyone to be where they are. They are constantly putting themselves in the face of fear and the unknown.

MLG gamers, you have incredible amounts of skill at what you do, honestly, but nothing even fucking CLOSE to what these athletes have, let alone how much more they put into what they do for the sport.



This was an awful decision made by ESPN and X-Games. I hope they realize it this year, when I'm there booing and yelling along with the other 50,000 people who came to watch a REAL competition.

If the game is 18 or 17+ or whatever the rating is on the box these days, do you have to be that old to watch the content? I am sure some parents wouldn't be happy seeing their kids watching such a "violent" game on TV, let alone ESPN.
