Why do you still live on the east coast?

I'm an east coaster, and I follow tons of west coast based companies/mountains on Facebook. Every day I scroll through and see amazing pictures and videos.

The west coast has bigger mountains, better parks, way more snow, more sun, and longer seasons.

Yet tons of people, like myself, remain on the east coast. So I wanted to ask the east coasters of NS, why do you do so?

Is it because of family and friends? Because you're satisfied with the skiing that the east coast offers? Maybe skiing isn't your whole life?

i like the east coast vibe, and sunday river is already open, but still you can do summer skiing in the west for longer seasons.

But really I think the reason I stay here is because it's just home. I grew up here, and if I went anywhere else it just wouldn't feel the same. I like supporting my home mountains even if they aren't the best around.

For me it is simple, work. For what I do the east coast is really the only place that gives me access to a job that pays well in my field and the mountains. I really can't do what I do in SLC, Denver, or anywhere else considered to be "out west." I guess I've sold out but I'm okay with that.

Unfortunately my job keeps me from moving and venturing out west to ski. Just too many commitments here, however i do get months off during Winter which i will be going out to UT, MT, and CO. As far as moving out there, its something i can never do... job is just too good to pass up.

A combination of what you have said.

I go to college on the east coast, my entire family lives out here, skiing isn't my life/my skiing preferences can be filled out here, and the type of skiing I enjoy can be done out east.

The choice to go to college out here was due to the things I enjoyed out east (the ocean, close proximity to friends and family,) combined with the proximity of UVM to mountains compared to DU (I-70 traffic seems so shitty).

My entire family lives within 2 hours of my house on the east coast, and with the deteriorating health of my grandparents, staying close seemed like the right idea. So far, it has been.

Also, skiing isn't my life. I do not plan on working in the ski industry nor do I plan on becoming a ski bum. The east coast offers so many career options in the industry I am interested in, so staying out here makes sense. That being said, a year out west is not out of the question, but a life out there is. The only benefit that the west offers over the east for me is skiing, and that is not enough.

Finally, I am not a park skier nor am I a big mountain skier, my upbringing was in racing. The east offers some of the most challenging snow conditions, has some of the best ski academies in the world, and has the highest USSA/FIS membership amount in the country. Combine these all together, you have a very talented group of racers out east. Why would I head out west when the east offers a bigger challenge?

In New England, I have my family within driving distance, my college friends all close by, my job and potential future jobs, and ski-able mountains within driving distance.

Sure, the west would be great for skiing, but I would have to give up being able to see my family and friends at any time to be in a place where I know no one. The career field that I am in/want to be in is mainly on the East Coast/Chicago, so there aren't a lot of career opportunities out there.

I'd much rather have decent mountains to ski at on the East while being happy with my work and close to my family than be out West and have great skiing but be unhappy about everything else.

I lived in VA, and my entire family lives in VA. If you're unhappy with the skiing quality of the east coast I'd say move. You're young, do it while you can. Don't be 35 and say "I had the chance to move and West and ski but I didn't.."

West is where it's at.

I know this isn't completley related. But. Everyone knows it's the best out west , but is it really that bad in the east coast? People make it seem like the only way to get good skiing is to move out west which I can see where they're coming from but still. I want to go to college in Vermont or New Hampshire because the skiing out there seems really doable for a college student, and either way I know it will be better than here in Wisconsin. Yes Colorado would be ideal but I feel like the skiing isn't as accessible as it would be for me if I lived in Vermont where there are so many great places I've heard of within a few hours and close to UVM where I want to go as well.

I live in GA. Outside of 1 1/2 years in Steamboat, I've lived in the South my entire life. My social network, family and most importantly, career are based here. I've learned that everything in life is a trade off. While my time spent in Steamboat is the best time of my life, I realized that I'd rather enjoy my time in those special areas out west with disposable income in luxurious accommodations, thus getting the most out of every trip out west.

If I were to relocate to a ski town, my quality of life would drop, my disposable income would probably be cut in half, and I wouldn't appreciate how special those places are.

Living in GA and skiing a few times a month in NC has made me appreciate the sport more. Its allowed me to see how special it is that there are locations in the Southern US that can support the sport and it gives me a unique thrill. While nothing inspires awe in me like the Wasatch, Never Summers, San Juans, Park Range, or Canadian Rockies, I'm happy to be where I'm at now. Plus being in my current situation is enough incentive to keep me motivated to work so one day I can relocate to outwest on my time.

A few years ago in between the Navy and college my buddies and I would flirt with the idea of moving out west. At one point it was our plan. I would dream of fluffy snow, snow storms that didn't end in a wet snow/ice mix and of course mmj. But, once I started school, and getting paid (GI bill pays rent based on location - NY gets paid A LOT in comparison to other areas based on cost of living) and realized how hard it would be to travel back east to visit, the dream died out. I was stationed in CT and would miss my family and friends in NY - I couldn't imagine being 5X as far. I didn't see it as a failure though, I love my life right now! I got 40 days skiing last year the livings good. But, I admit not moving was more of a comfortable, easier choice...

You seem like the opposite of 99% of the people on this site , not saying that's bas though. But i have never seen someone on here who is into racing

The older I get the more I love east coast skiing. Tight trees, gotta know where to go to find the spots...usually really well groomed runs as well. Vermont gets decent snowfall and is not to far from where I work. I would never leave the EC though because of work. Opportunities in NYC are not even close to what most big mountain resorts areas could offer. Would NEVER move to California either..largest socialist state of the US and will be in serious trouble in the coming years. Talk to the people who live there now.

For me its the simple factor that this is where my home is.

Always been the reason... from deciding not to move to Whistler but instead get a job in Collingwood. Why I moved to Montreal and continue to stay here.

Blue Mountain was where I grew up, and the people and places around there I simply didn't want to leave. I moved to Montreal to work at Newschoolers which was a sweet job - and have ended up making this my home. My friends, family, work, house and everything I know is here.

I'm perfectly happy to jump on a plane to experience the west coast goodness. I love what I have here every day, and absolutely love to ski on the east. I couldn't even tell you why.

Im here at University and thats pretty much it but it does make sense... for now.

1. I am at BY FAR the best university in Canada for myself, for way too many reasons to list
2. I am within driving distance of my original home (8 hours)
3. I have family history here
4. It is still close to the best skiing that the East Coast offers (1 hour from Jay Peak)

Im graduating this year and my plans are to pack my life up in my car and drive straight out west as soon as I finish my final exam. I will always cherish the memories that the East, my original home and my current home have given me but god damn its time for me to get my ass out into the mountains.

I am probably part of the 1% who is a racer and not a park skier. Still, I joined NS once I stopped racing and got more into all-mountain/touring kind of skiing. I enjoyed many of the members and decided to stay.

Because I feel like as Eastcoasters we appreciate snow more and we learn to make do with the conditions we have... When we want to ski in the summer we have to make or get msnow or carpeted setups... Not just go to a glacier.. Im not trying to offend anyone who skis on the Westcoast, because if I could I would probably live out there but You just have to make do with what you have and where you are.

Family is my only reason. If I moved West it'd be to Calgary. I'd be making more money, more of my friends currently live there and better skiing. I really don't know why I've found it hard to leave.

FOr everyone else :

East coast makes it challenging like everyone else said on this thread. YOu actually have to prep and take in account for everything an be on top of your A game out here. One second your ok and the next ice patch the whole way down. I would move out west but as of right now college, family, etc.. east coast is for me

being a high school student, it is pretty much impossible to move out west. However, i plan on going to college in the west even though my whole family is in the east. Skiing is my favorite thing in the world, and i am willing to make sacrifices if it means my season is longer than 3 or 4 months and i can ski in good conditions regularly.

Just booked my flight to Colorado for next Wednesday and honestly I can say that school was the true factor in moving out there, as well as my family but now I'll be turning solo with online school

I've never been out west. But on the east coast I feel like those few days where the snow is right, the Temps are right, and the suns out and you can huck all the tricks you don't wanna throw on bulletproof feel like nothing else I've ever felt in my life. They are the best days you could ever ask for and we don't get many of those every year but those days will never get old to me. And the days when it's sub 0 Temps and harder than rock are the days where we say fuck it and go out because we love skiing and we wouldn't want to do anything else but ski on ice that day. The West coast might be paradise for a skier but every skier knows that feeling of that perfect day won't last forever and soon it will become the norm. I never want those perfect days to become the norm for me. That's why I love the east coast
