RIP - music

Woke up to a rude awakening this morning. Right after I ordered a new ipod cable for my car, I went to buy a new ipod. Ipod classic with massive storage is a thing of the past. 160GB music mega-libraries have given way to 32GB devices with lots of gadgets.

I remember in college how many of my friends had the 80-160GB ipods full of music.

Anyway, apple said they stopped making the classic because they couldn't get the parts anymore, doesn't seem like the best reason but my dads 2005 iPod still works (well, with it's impressive-at-the-time 2GB hard drive) so I think the second hand market's still a good place to get one.

I'm pretty sure Apple still sells the 160gb classic on their website. I got one from there not too long ago.

I've taken to Sansa Clip for skiing and running. Great battery life and easy to switch music around. Generally, you have a really good idea what music you will want to hear when you are out skiing so it's not hard. It's the car driving/traveling abroad/hiking part that I'll really miss the big music storage. Yeah with technology these days we can stream music off 8tracks and whatnot, but we still have data limits and service coverage issues. I really like how I can plug an ipod into my car and it will charge at the same time. Aux inputs are whack.

Hopefully this used ipod I bought lasts for years, but that's unlikely given my bad history with them and now that they don't make the parts I know i'm totally SOL next time one breaks

I got one. Bought a used-refurbished one for $235, but I guess the day that dies is the day I'll have to get a new car with a USB port--if that even works. I'll have to see if my SansaClip USB will work in my truck

Apple's whole business model is to make a relatively similar line of products with a couple customizable options so they can cut down on production costs. The ipod classic wasn't fitting into their line of exclusively touch screen stuff and i doubt it was selling super well

why in sam hill would you need 160gigs of music, I don't even think I have nearly that much on my computer.

when i was your age we had to walk 4 miles to the local record shop
buy the album then walk 4 miles back home to listen to it
i did have a portable 8 track player though.
