I'm looking into buying new skis and was wondering which I should get. I am 5'8 145lbs and I ski about 50% park, 50% glades and shit like Tuckerman Ravine. I want something that can handle the trees, but handle the hard pack ice shit that us east coasters get. I really like the looks of the Kartel 106 but wonder how it will be in the park and also wonder if it'll be hard for quick spins and rails. Would I be better off with the Filthy Riches? Could I ski the FRs in the trees and on Tuckerman? Help! +K for help
A good park ski is frequently the opposite of a good all mountain ski. Something that is near center mounted with rail-struck edges simply won't perform well on steep ice or hardpack. If skiing very steep backcountry terrain like Tuck's is something you plan on doing a lot of, then buy a wider, stiffer ski with a good sidecut catered to that so you can get the most out of your experiences. If, realistically, you ski park most days on the hill, then buy a park specific ski so you get the most out of that. The idea of a one-ski quiver is really flawed, because you'll just end up with one ski that kind of sucks for everything. I would purchase whatever ski you'll get the most use out of first, then save up for the other. More skis = more fun.
But to answer you're question more directly, the best all mountain ski is most likely going to be something in the category of a powder freeride ski between 100-110 mm under boot. Something to the tune of the LINE Sir Francis Bacon, K2 Shreditor, or, as you said, the ON3P Kartel is what you're looking for if you just want one ski. I've heard good things about all of those, and almost every company has something comparable.
Armada Ar7 is by far the best east coast all mountain ski. It rips on just about everything. Steeps, trees, bumps, oh yea and did i mention its a beast in the park?
only down side is it is a little stiff (for me) it does not have any sort of early rise or rocker (has its benefits and drawbacks) And it struggles in any real powder. But 90% of the time there's no real deep stuff on the east coast anyway.
I'm out of Stowe, VT and I ordered the Kartel 106s as well. I'll give an East Coast review of them when winter arrives, but they may be too wide for park in the East. I don't ski as much park, mostly woods and glades so it makes more sense for that.
