Thoughts on Clayton Villa's 'Five'

but for real, skiing was tight, I just didn't get the point of the girl. It was kind of just really out of place and I couldn't help but laugh a bit.

I didn't understand the girl or the bear, but he slayed it so eh

the skiing was insane! I guess I just I'm just not hip enough to understand what the whole girl/bear thing was about? . Quite artsy.

Clayton Villa is a great skier, and slayed it on those urban rails. I don't understand the use of the Rilakkuma bear and the girl in the bikini in a ski edit though.... Some of it was just weird... My face was like

Not gonna lie, I don't understand what the girl/ bear meant but I thought it was cool. The skiing was rad, the editing was cool, the story line(even though I don't understand it) was good. I liked it.

I realize you understand why a woman might not like the film narrative, but this is written to the fucksticks who don't.
I'm going to start with a few disclaimers
1. As a female, I interpret things differently than a male. I can't explain why, and it's simply because I have a vagina and men don't.
2. Male privilege additionally gives men a different view. You may know it exists but you don't necessarily notice it in everyday life.

At first, while watching five I was pissed off to be honest. Women can ski. Don't believe me? Look around. Ladies are killing it, and this year's movie releases show that. Tatum Monod in 'Less', Pretty Faces, Shades of Winter: Pure, the ladies at Nine Queens, Sochi; women are stepping up they're game. So if it's a ski movie, why the hell not show us skiing if you're going to show us at all?

I suppose it gets tricky once you realize the narrative involved. However the intro was unnecessary, how does a half naked woman contribute to your ski film or plot? I didn't like when she was in the box, didn't really get it, just seemed degrading to her honestly. Could have been done more tastefully in general.

So yeah, I support the move towards narratives in ski films and I'm intrigued by the story in 'Five', but it could have been done tastefully.

The girl wasn't even lusting over a tangible thing, really. She was portrayed as weak and damaged. THATS the worst part, that she was weak and damaged.

Narratives are neat but keep the hype on skiing, not half naked women (see NS thread early responses regarding her ass).

^ tl;dr cool plot but the use of the woman was tasteless and could have been done differently

Thus reflecting him and skiing having the time of his life until it starts to tear you apart until you are down and out, this also reflecting his injury. THEN THE BEAR COMES BACK AS A REAL BEAR. THIS MEANING CLAYTON COMES BACK FROM HIS INJURY STRONGER THAN EVER AND FALLS IN LOVE AGAIN WITH SKIING.

I've found myself thinking the same thing. Like if theres a girl in your edit you should make her ski and such. However, that's not the point of guys adding women to their movies. Boys will be boys and boys like boobs and booty. It gives the general male population more of a reason to watch. It really has nothing to do with girls skiing. She's not on skis. She is not trying to encourage skiing in any way. She plays a metaphorical role in this film.

That being said, I just want to see more girls getting their names out there and making equivalent films. If I was at that level, I totally would be. But because I can't and there really isn't a whole lot I can do at the moment to change girls skiing(although I'm in the process with a local shop for some things), I get mad when I see this stuff. I couldn't explain it to you. It's not feminism, it's not me being jealous. It's me wanting to see more girls out there. When there's more girls modeling in ski edits than girls actually skiing it makes me sad.

YASSS I kinda saw it this way with the girl's relationship to the bear as Clayton's relationship to skiing.
I understand how it could have been done more tastefully but once I saw a connection I felt it was quite insightful actually ahaha

But also the skiing was sooo tight (I love Clayton) but I wish there was even more of it

she may not represent you as a sole person, but I'd say it's still sexism.

I actually think her looks and what not is actually very relevant to the message. As she represents skiing in the story line. and we all love skiing. If skiing were a girl, it would be a smoking hot girl, not an average chick in a hoodie and jeans.

however

i get very turned off of films if they are using ladies such as this.

so i haven't watched it.

this is what I think. I honestly think this whole edit sucks, watching a girl in a bikini macking on a teddybear felt like watching a really sketchy porno, all that was missing was that she had been an actual sex scene.

its his way of putting out his own reflection on how he feels about portraying himself as not only a skier but so may other thing s that've come into play in his life to enable him to get to where he is today. and he's stoked on it. you know you are. sabbath
