Recommend me a first dirtbike!

I'm looking at getting into motorcycles, more because its something i want to be able to do and do well. not to cruise around on my R1 with cargo shorts and backwards hat. but get to the point where i can get myself around an MX track and maybe do some track days on a sport bike eventually.

I figure a dirtbike is a good starting point to get the feel of the bike moving around and sliding, get my control skill set dialed, do some jumping, etc.. plus it just seems fun.

I've got some basic experience on a pit bike, some friends dirtbikes, etc. can get around somewhat difficult terrain and have the controls down well. and do a ton of mountain biking, so im not a complete noob but definitely not good.

I dont think i need anything with crazy power or capabilities. but would rather have something easy to control, whip around, find its limits, etc..

I'd like to keep the cost under 2000, less is obviously better especially if i'd be upgrading after a while.

so far people have recommended a klx140, tw200, yz250/other 250's

any thoughts?

trail ride or motocross track.....



two smokers all day if you're good enough to ride powerband.
the 2stroke mx bikes: CR KX YZ are faster than hell but you need to ride them hot or you'll foul sparkplugs.
Im 21, 5"5' 140lb currently have a moded CR85RB.

any 2 stroke 125 or 4 stroke 250. I personally am not the big of a fan of Honda or Yamaha, only have had Kawi's and Suzuki's. $2000 will get you a very nice late model 125 or 250. Ive got a 2007 RM 250 that I use on the track and trails.

No point in wasting money on a 125 or 250, when you'll want a bigger bike in a couple months. Pull your bootlegs up and drop some cash on a real bike like a ktm 450 sxf, or a crf 450.

i agree with the stroke 125 or 4 stroke 250. Especially With you budget, you should be able to find plenty of 125s at or under 2k. They are also a great bike to start to learn how to work on a motor. First motor I rebuilt was an older cr80.

Have you considered a supermoto? Best of both worlds and an xr250 or xr400 is in your price range,ride down the street to your trails! if your looking strictly for a dirtbike go two stroke to save money and learn to ride. 125 or 250 2T

Same here. My buddy is an ex semipro MX racer so I'd like to do some track days with him and take some bikes to Utah, but most of all get good at wheelies without wrecking my street bikes

I'm generally leaning towards a 2smoker 250. I'd like a KTM but I only see 125 SX when I search craigslist, can't find a 250. Are they not made?

look for a 125. Relatively cheap to buy (depending on where you live) cheap and easy to maintain.
