Has anybody ever heard of Winter Park, CO? My college ski club is planning a trip there for this season. How are the parks? What's it like compared to well known places in CO? Is it worth the cash to go there? Thanks guys.
I've never been there, but I've heard good things in general. I know that it's known for being less crowded than the Vail resorts, and if you've never skied CO, trust me, that's a huge plus that it's got going for it.

When you say you wouldn't spend over $500 do you mean like $500 for just the tickets, or are you including airfare, tickets, and a room?
Sooooooooo fucking crowded. Its like Breck on a holiday, but every weekend. Maybe I have just had bad luck but every time I have gone, maybe 10-15 times, it has been a clusterfuck everytime.
Awesome tree skiing though and generally good vibes all around. Not as good vibes as A Basin, but definitely better than all the other summit county resorts. It is kind of awkward to get around the mountain if you don't know your way around and arent skiing with someone who does.
I love the town of Winter Park/Grandby, its goddamn beautiful there. There are awesome places to eat and some relatively cheap places to stay. Elevation pizza is the best pizza in CO in my opinion. Summit County is a grimy shitstain of a town compared to WP and grandby
I had my best powder there last year, but because it was so fucking crowded it was tracked out by 10:00 on the wide open runs, maybe noon in the trees.
I would definately recommend it for a college trip just based on the vibes on the mountain and the awesome town
I went there for one day 2 winters ago when I was out in CO with college friends and going to a different resort each day. I didn't take one lap through the park and I would suggest you don't either. I am guessing you are from the east coast so take advantage of your time out in colorado and just hit the parks when you are back east. Mary Jane and Panoramic lift have some great runs/trees. You can hit the park in the east or colorado, it doesn't make too much of a difference, so take advantage of the type of skiing you can't get back east while you're out there.
Best Pizza in colorado is Beau Jo's pizza in Idaho Springs haha but nah elevations is pretty dank too. But back to the topic bro, its fucking colorado, you should honestly just go for it.

If you're okay with hiking / skating for a bit, the headwalls and chutes on the cirque are a great time. If you know where you're going, parts of Sunnyside lift, eaglewind lift, the mushroom patch, and the challenger lift trees are all a great time too. But as mentioned before, be quick as it will get tracked quickly, especially on weekends.
For park, it again depends on what time of the season you're going. Early season is alright, nothing huge or crazy like you would get at Breck or keystone nor does it flow as smoothly IMO, but it's got some fun stuff. Later season like Jan, Feb, March is when it gets bigger and better. Not sure if you still need to pay the fee and watch the safety video for dark territory either but if you're decent at park and you're looking for that its worth it.
Elevation pizza is also the bomb. Don't know if you'll have a car but if you want to drive around for a bit too Granby and Frasier have some cool scenery. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info! I doubt I'll have a car since it's a school trip, we'll probably take a shuttle or something. I only started getting into park 3 years ago and didn't really progress much last year thanks to mono and a broken wrist. I'm definitely more into smaller stuff and rails but I have been skiing since I was little so I do a bit of everything, but I can't throw down. Maybe I'll actually progress on this trip though. I live in upstate NY and don't own any kind of pow skis because it never snows enough around here for me to need them so I don't think I'll be hiking out to do pillow lines anytime soon because I'm pretty poor right now. Mostly I'm looking forward to that fluffy pow (I've been to Utah 3 times and can't get enough), the awesome tree lines and the parks that are setup by people who actually know what they're doing. By the looks of it most people say to go for it. I'm not sure how much it'll cost but there's a club meeting tonight with the details. I'll come back with a price and ask if you guys think it's worth it.
I have a Steamboat/Winter Park Season pass. I Live in Steamboat so obviously ski there more, that being said Winter Park is fun. It has a super weird lay out and a lot of flat terrain. But it can be fun if you know where to go. Every time I go I ask ski patrol where I should ski and they have always pointed me in the direction of nice trees and steeps. The parks are fun but nothing compared to Breck/Keystone, but crowds and lift lines will be significantly less.
2 parks small one you can lap and have a good time it's alright, big park you need to sign a waiver and pay money to get into it. biiig booters. depending on snow conditions vasquez could be dope as well. fun place for sure

They have a free bus system that will take you anywhere you need to go. I haven't been out there when it was calm enough for the top to open but I hear is is awesome on a nice day. Eagle Wind was my favorite but Jane has lots of sheltered terrain when it's blowing. Have fun.
i live in vail and have gone there quite frequently... every weekend is Denver gaper day, maryjane is good and theres good tree skiing, they tend to have a decent amount of snow.

Whiteface. That pass is a better deal for me since Gore is my home mountain and Bellearye is close to where my girlfriend lives. I've got a car though so I'll be going to Whiteface every weekend and probably to Jay if the club does a trip there. If you wanna PM me we can talk about it more, if you need rides or whatever.

Excellent skiing. But it's pretty hard to consider it not "well known". It's as big a player as many of the other CO resorts. MJ is legendary bump and tree skiing.

holy crap, that is so awesome. i always wondered what the deal was with that insane rail. i have only tried to hit the top while intentionally not going down whatsoever, it is so gnarly!
I'm there right now, I think the park is way underrated. They got some good stuff on the backside too (for those who want more steep n deep/ glade type-skiing. Only thing negative is it is kind of hard to get around the mountain (a lot of cat trails). Besides that, great mountain.
We used to do spring breaks to Jackson Hole in college for 500-ish which is really good considering how damn expensive JH lift tickets are which would just be about 500 in lift tickets alone if you planned your own trip. Granted if I had my choice, I'd go to Jackson. Winter Park is pretty cheap, the lift tickets, the hotels so there are cheaper deals out there but this trip will probably save you a good $200 than if you planned the trip on your own. If it's your only option on the docket then do it.
Winter Park is my home mountain. If you're looking to be a park rat... It's probably not the best spot for you; I'd advise you to go to Breck.
However, if you enjoy skiing the whole mountain. Winter Park is the place for you. The Marry Jane side is always filled with people that are excited to shred some really cool stuff.
I highly recommended spending the money. You wont be disappointed.

I've found WP to be very not crowded. Personal park & pipe laps all day. Trees there are wonderful. Lots to explore. See how hard you can shred your legs on bumps.
Also, park at MJ's free lower lots, walk/skate 50 yards & take the 6-pack up. Saves a boatload of time & walking.
