3-Axis Gimbals???

I've used the movi m10 and own a DJI Ronin. Haven't tried them on skis yet. Just handheld, car mounted, skateboarding and tripod mounted.

There re is a huge difference in quality between the higher end gimbals. They can fly bigger and heavier cameras, and have p-tap and usb to power wireless focus and video transmitters from the gimbal battery.

Im shooting with the red epic this weekend on the ronin at the camera setup is around 30lbs. I'll post some videos and pictures from the shoot Monday or Tuesday.

I own a gimbal for my epic.... personally i am not a huge fan. It gets great shots... but i dont think the technology is there to have a reliable product. There is much that can go wrong with it. Its also is really hard to trouble shoot in the field. If something goes wrong while shooting (many of times this has happened with mine) its tough to find a solution. It could be any number of issues. That being said if your smart with electronics and trouble shooting you may love one. They are great for getting unique smooth and creative shots.

How heavy is the ronin? My epic on my gimbal is no wear close to 30lbs. Its more like 13 or 15. Damn your going to die holding that haha. I get tired from my rig... Stoked to see what ya get.

red primes 6lbs

monitor 2lbs
anton bauer battery 2lbs

so it's around 24 or 25 lbs I guess. I don't really have problems in the field. You just have to get a good balance on all the axis. Then power up the ronin and tune it with the iOS app.
And it's not to tiring if the take is less than 3 minutes. I have my gimbal PA hold the rig before action and right when we cut so I only have to hold it for operating.

J-cal what gimbal are you using.

I think I might get a steadicam arm and vest for the gimbal in the future to have the 4th axis stabilized too and carry the weight for longer shots.

I am using the levefly gimbal. It could just be my gimbal but i have not had a good experience. The ronin seems much much better.

Thats a gnarly rig man. Stoked to see what you do with it. Makes sense why it so heavy. On my gimbal i rocked a striped down epic with small leica r primes. That must be why mine is so light. I do want a wireless follow focus for my gimbal that seems key.

I checked out your showreel and is most of the skating/biking done with the Ronin? It looks great.

And how would the Ronin compare to a glidecam? I'm thinking once you master the skill of using a glidecam it's relatively similar to a gimbal (just ones heavier). Thanks for the reply.

My reel is all glidecam 4000 work right now. I've only had the ronin since it came out in August. My YouTube channel has ronin test videos. And glidecam operating is totally different than gimbal operating. The gimbal is best when you have three people operating, one holding it, one pulling focus and one for framing with the remote. Glidecam is a lot easier to learn how to use because your hand does the pan and tilt not a motor and electronics.

Really curious about your gimbal set-up...

That Ronin with an Epic, let alone a Scarlet, is heavy enough. Why add on the unnecessary weight of an anton bauer to the back of the monitor (insane) and also, why the 25mm Red Pro? That thing is massive and really not that great... Is it equipment you already have or...?

I am just curious because you have all the pieces to make a great rig, but are making it a lot harder than it needs to be IMO...or at least for whoever is running with it! haha

Its the lens and camera package that was available from depaul university film stage. I only own the gimbal and follow focus. the stage doesn't have any smaller monitors without anton bauers because they normally just used with tripods and dollys. And the smaller PL lens kit was out with another camera already. its not the best setup but it was what the renal package had from the school so I just made it work. the weight wasn't bad for shooting in a studio, and we only did select shots with it not entire scenes. It would need a lot smaller lenses and monitor/battery for long hours in the field.
