Americans who have lived in Amsterdam

Hey guys,
My girlfriends and I are looking to move to Amsterdam for a year and I am looking for advice from anyone who has done this. My girlfriend will be going to school and I will be trying to find a job.I have a economics degree from a school in Chicago and do not speak dutch. So my questions are: 1)What work permits/visas will I need to be able to work in Amsterdam for a year+. 2) How difficult is it to find a job for expats that do not speak dutch.
Any help would be great

I lived in Amsterdam for a little. Thing that really got me is the little differences. I mean, they got the same shit over there that we got here, but it's just...it's just, there it's a little different. Like, you can walk into a movie theater in Amsterdam and buy a beer. And I don't mean just like in no paper cup; I'm talking about a glass of beer. And in Paris, you can buy a beer at McDonald's. And you know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris? They call it a "Royale with Cheese."

And weeds legal, but it ain't a hundred percent legal. I mean, you can't walk into a restaurant, roll a joint, and start puffin' away. They want you to smoke in your home or certain designated places. Breaks down like this, okay: it's legal to buy it, it's legal to own it, and if you're the proprietor of a hash bar, it's legal to sell it. It's illegal to carry it, but that doesn't really matter 'cause, get a load of this, all right; if you get stopped by the cops in Amsterdam, it's illegal for them to search you. I mean, that's a right the cops in Amsterdam don't have.

I only take classically properly schooled butler's with at least four year experience in a large house.

As far as finding a simple job, it shouldn't be too hard, Amsterdam is a very international city and pretty much everyone can speak English. An actual job may be a bit harder, there are no set guidelines for this. Most expats that I know got send here by the company they work for. We are also drowning in people with a master in economy.

Rent will fuck you in the butt and some regions of Amsterdam are to be avoided, (West and Southeast) At least students from abroad can get places easily via a uni affiliated housing scheme.

can i ask how you got your visa/residency?

There are work holidays a lot of places. Being frok the us hurts cause nobody likes us. If you were from somewhere else they pick you up in a limo at the airport and lrt you stay for 6 years no problem but if your american they spit on you and only let you stay in the terminal till the next flight back to murica leaves.

HAHAHAHA! You're kidding, right? Guess you've never heard of a "Safety" pat down where the officers pat you down to make sure you aren't carrying a weapon that could be used against them while they talk to you.

why is everyone assuming weed when CO, and WA are a lot closer, cheaper and easier? Not to mention CA, OR and other states where it is easy to get. Plus, it is easy to get in the rest of the states?

That's actually not true. Police can search you on reasonable suspicion or if you are in a "risk area".

At least continental police are quite nice, they don't have tazers and never use their guns, be kind to them and nothing happens, be a twat and enter a world of fines.

Amsterdam's legendary status for weed is just something that has held up over the ages due to drug tourism, there are hundreds of coffeeshops who sell so an abundant variety everywhere, but that's Amsterdam, it caters to the tourists, in the rest of the country only larger towns (say 50.000+) usually have maybe one coffeeshop filled with shady locals and that's it.

It just isn't a big deal for the Dutch people, it's a bit of a shame really, Amsterdam has so much more to offer than drugs.

Weed is illegal in Amsterdam. The dutch are tolerant people and look the other way to do whats best for business. I am moving there to travel with my girlfriend. Any serious comments would be great.

Yeah, coming from California's Bay Area, I can say the same. It's been legit 20 years of drug tourism here. Dispensaries in CA and OR are about as easy to get into as it is to tell your boss you're sick when you really just want to sleep in till noon, and it's about as easy to find someone selling weed, or just smoking it in general, as it is to trip on a poorly shaped curb in SF...

Meanwhile, for the most part, to many locals it's just not a big deal. I haven't smoked in months, and don't really think anything of it... but stoners from the east think of 'northern cali' as 'yay great weed' rather than what it really is... I used to travel to visit people back east and folks would ask me if I could get them weed just because I'm from CA... it's ridiculous.

It's not illegal, it's "gedoogd". Just like "gezelligheid" it has no actual direct translation in English only a description. In the context of the law of the Netherlands, the term gedogen, refers to not enforcing certain laws.

The Dutch government tolerates some offences. Some things such as possessing small amounts of marijuana are formally forbidden by law, but the Dutch government abstains from bringing criminal charges against the offenders. According to the current gedoogbeleid the possession of a maximum amount of five grams cannabis for personal use is not prosecuted.
