Next summer...6 weeks abroad where to ski?

Anny advice?
South America or New Zeeland?

From what I know there seems to be better pow in South America.

Thats all the information that I can possibly offer at this time.

If you go to NZ I would look into the ski fields as there is better terrain and snow than the larger resorts there. So look into places like broken river, craigieburn and rainbow. But this is all hearsay as I haven't been to NZ yet.

If you're going to spend 6 weeks in South America I would really suggest looking into Nevados de Chillian in southern Chile. I've spent some time there with Evolve Chile and the 2 weeks I spent there barely touched the surface there. There is a hostel in the town las trancas and you can usually just hitchhike to the mountain. It gets much better snow compared to the resorts near Santiago as well.

Sounds good!! What time of the year were you there? What do you thing about learning some basic spanish?

the ski season unde. The equator is shorter, but it's from July to October.

New Zealand has very variable snow conditions. I lived in Wanaka at a hostel for two months hitch hiking to the ski area every day. In that time I skied pow once... it also rained for a week straight. Cardrona has a sweet park and the off piste is decent but honestly compared to the mega resorts you have in Europe New Zealand ski areas are tiny (two lifts at Cardrona with decent terrain). Treblecone is a resort near Cardrona and more big mountain oriented.

Pros of NZ are everyone speaks english but its going to way more expensive than South America. Wanaka is a ski bum paradise though. You can find living for very cheap with lots of other people doing the same thing you are and split a car. Night lift is pretty good too.

I also have skied in Chile and the mountains are waaay bigger and there is just more terrain in general. Ski areas like La Parva and Valle Nevado are connected. I got DUMPED on while I was there and the weird thing about Chile is locals don't like to ski pow. I literally skied untouched pow for two days straight. Obviously, Chile and South America in general will be cheaper but the language barrier is something to look at.

I have not skied in Argentina but that is defininty on my to do list. Coincidently I have also skied in the middle east and it very much resembles the "sprawl" of South American treeless ski areas.

Honestly can't go wrong with either but I would not go back to NZ for the quality (and lack of) snow. It's NZ which is epic in itself and has lots of other activities to offer but I would choose South America.

New Zealand if you don't MIMD a lack of pow. We have so much to offer other than skiing. We have a bunch of sick parks too.

If your into the whole big mountain, powder thing then I'd go to South America. Though I have to say Mt Ruapehu has some gnarly ass terrain in NZ.

If you tour I say go down to NZ. If you are an inbounds skier I would say you have a better chance of finding good snow/terrain in SA. While the touring in NZ looks pretty awesome (although you're going to have to work for it!!!)

Tru. NZ has the sickest terrain if you venture out of bounds.
In October your best bet is to come to a mountain in the North island called Mt Ruapehu (its the latest running resort in the southern hemi) and the terrain is just awesome in spring.
