Before I start filming

Next winter I'm planning to start making edits. I only own a gopro hero 3 black and my friend has a Nikon D5100 dslr and I'm wondering on how should I combine them in a single edit.

The Nikon shoots 24p, 25p or 30p. Which one should I use?
the Gopro shoots 25p to 60p. Is it meaningless to use 60fps since vimeo and youtube don't support 60p?
Should I use protune?
Should I film at 1440 4:3 and do the dynamic stretching thing?

Shoot the Nikon at 1080/30, and the gopro at 1080/60. The purpose of shooting 60p has nothing to do with how Youtube or Vimeo handles it, rather what you're able to do in terms of slow motion in your editing software. Once you've edited your video with the slow motion, you just export at 30p for the web.

Shoot the Nikon at 30 because since 60 divides evenly by 30, you won't drop any frames when you put the different footage in the same timeline

Yeah, just go with 30 in this case for starters for sure. There are ways you could export it so it's in 23.97 or whatever for the cinematic look, but ultimately, 30 looks clean as shit anyway and is super underrated for it's 90's live-view look, so I'd stick to keeping it simple stupid, especially for starting out.

I used a D5100 all of last season.

I shot at 30p and conformed most of it to 24p, I liked the kinda dreamy 80% speed.

If you head over to http://www.nikonhacker.com, you can upgrade the bitrates of the video which makes a huge difference and you can get the manual ISO in video mode hack too which means the camera won't keep autoadjusting the brightness for yoo.

You'll need to go to the nikon site, download the latest firmware update for your camera, it should be 1.02 and then use the firmware patching tool on nikonhacker to patch it. I checked these three options:



With these selected, only the "normal quality" file will playback in camera, the "high quality" will not let you, but it's useful for low light shots as they hold up to editing a lot better.
