I intend to use it mostly with a chest mount POV, but would also like to use it as a follow cam at times. My goal is to make edits for my own creative outlet (I'm also a total beginner), but it would be nice for the quality to be somewhat decent. With the new entry Hero for only $130, I figured this would be the way to go, but would I be limited with the specs? Would it be worth the extra $170 for the hero 3+? How much will I notice the 720p at 30fps vs 60fps? I understand the entry level one is really inexpensive as far as action cameras go, but I'd rather not dish out $130 just to say "this sucks. oh well, it was cheap."
I'd personally just save up and get the 4 if you're set on a gopro, but if you do want to go the cheaper option. I have an original gopro that'd I'd sell for 100 bucks shipped, perfect condition, just missing some of the mounts. Let me know if you're interested.
I would just get the HERO for $130. You won't be wasting your money and you'll be pretty happy with the results. I know soursteezle offered to sell you his for $100 which is a fair deal. Keep in mind you will still have to buy a SD card though.
The advantages and disadvantages of the new Hero:
PROS:
* Longer battery life
* Smaller/more compact
* Easier to use (easier to read LCD screen)
* A few added features (lowlight, superview, etc.)
