7d or 70d?

I am looking at purchasing one of these cameras and am wondering what camera you think would be a better option. I can get the 7d for $690, and the 70d for $760. Not a huge price difference, but I am wondering if it's worth it to go with the older 7d and save a little bit of money, or if I should go with the newer 70d. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

70D unless you value a larger buffer, sexy large viewfinder and beefier build over everything else.

The 70D shares many components a.i. autofocus with the 7D and has much newer things onboard that the 7D lacks. Video on the 70D is also better.

I honestly don't see how...

newer sensor that's not all that groundbreaking...

Same Video formats as the 7D...

AF system that's not all that much more impressive... even if it is the 7D's is just fine.

Takes SD cards instead of CF? Yay?

Slower burstrate.

I'd imagine not quite as well built.




Honestly, in my opinion, I'd rather have the 7D, but I'm curious if I'm missing something

Also, OP, what's more important to you? Video or Photo.

If it's video, and the flippy screen is worth it to you, go for the 70D. The 7D has a slightly faster burst rate and a larger Viewfinder - it's AF is plenty good for tracking subjects and as far as I'm aware, has better build quality than the 70D.

12,800 ISO vs 6,400 ISO

Screen flips out

Touch screen

Lighter

HDR photos

Other than that though, they really are the same.

Ehh I don't feel like that sensor performs well at 12800 at all, personally. I'd keep it under 6400. The 7D seems to max at 3200, but a whole stop doesn't feel that significant.

Also, the prices are so similar, that the 70D would probably be worth the extra for the flippy screen anyway - whether you are intending to use for video or not, the flipscreen is pretty nice.

Obviously its not going to perform that well at 12800 but having the option is always good. That being said I agree. The 7d is an kick ass camera and built like a fucking tank.

Lighter: yes because not full magnesium alloy body.

HDR photos, built-in HDR is a joke.

You forgot more important differences such as wifi tethered shooting for the 70D which actually is a compelling feature.

if you somehow manage to break the Screen flip while using your camera, you shouldn't own a camera in the first place.
