messplayI write this in pure confidence but this is NS and it's 8:30am so I'll risk it...
Facebook began to decline roughly 3-4 years ago once businesses, small companies, etc. began to use it primarily for networking and marketing services. The "likes" engagement back then was appropriate, now people don't really care, or they'll see it and won't put forth the effort of a "like". So instead, you have the females from 20-29yrs old and the really really sheltered, overly social (in public) males that basically feel the need to share and re-post hilarious vines, photos, meme's, etc. that they JUST saw that a mere 80% of the actual 'internet friendly' audience has already seen and my god my god my god does this shit make me cringe. No, do not say it's because I must spend my time on the internet all day so how else would I know where to find or see these things or know about that meme and that video (about to go viral) etc.. It is because I know where to look. I've spent my fair share of time online - and luckily had my main online presence during the shift and publication of all of the current mainstream sites. Tumblr for instance was 'secret' to a ton of people and fuck do I miss that - but like Facebook, Tumblr emerged because all the main bloggers left Wordpress and Blogspot. Then Twitter began to explode and now it's still at a higher usage than Facebook (fuck Facebook). People that have Facebook activated and don't use it, probably have Tinder, love the Messaging app because for some reason iMessage and Texting isn't good enough, or because Facebook is their primary network for getting all of the sloppy second and thirds of the internet 'news'. THAT IS A FACT. It is one or a sum of those categories. Mine is deactivated. I'll re-activate maybe once a month (if that) just to troll the fuck out of my 'friends' and make some obligatory post or bait them into a ton of likes...I've literally done experiements. Like, if you post the most real, honest article or photo captioned piece and the engagement is so low on FB yet higher on Tumblr - it's funny. It's funny in the way that people on FB are way too shy to press the Like or be honest and comment something. Like those two actions are too strong and forward as opposed to a reblog or like on Tumblr. I could go on right now and re post an article on Ebola or the OG Ferguson issue and get almost nothing yet do the same on Tumblr or a Forum and (granted, even if my follower to friend count was equivalent) I'd get more engagement and feedback. Facebook was the first "share" icon of these top platforms when it began so it's adherent in staying one of the most installed apps on peoples phones yet it rarely gets used. And I use the term 'engagement' firmly. You can go onto these kids accounts, especially on Instagram - and see the 'Like-to-Follower' ratio and be like yep that fool bought those followers, or he uses the Hashtag glitch to get more likes than he does Followers, wtf? That's what it is. People use these platforms to gain these ego strokes to make them feel important where they lack elsewhere (in so many areas). Again, take Ello for example. Ello will out-do Facebook in user engagement usage in the next 2-3 years. Mark my words. People love minimalism, simple, ad-free sites. Ello will provide that and it's about time the creatives that so many people see behind big firms/blogs take action and create a central platform that actually uses all the ideas I just pointed out and saturates them into an online community. I know, I know...people have their Reddit, their Gizmodo, their CNN, their DarkWeb, their ComplexMag, their Hypebeast, their Highsnobiety. But for some reason it just annoys me when I saw something explode as a video or photo or some newsworthy article and then months later some kid posts it online to Facebook and all the other sheep of 'friends' that just LOOOOVE his daily posts on how hard his day at work was or what that girl did with her baby today and then they get a ton of engagement because those sheep are also oblivious to the internet. A lot of this comes from some inner hatred I guess. I have some friends that wrote for BuzzFeed, Guff, etc. and they just think they are God. Like OMG I WrOtE An ArtiCLE and so many people see it and I have a twitter account linked to me because I am an Author WOOOWWW Look mom I #madeit. Shut the fuck up. Just shut the fuck up. Popularity gets to people's heads and it honestly is so nice to actually follow and engage and watch humble artists, writers, bloggers, creatives, photographers, and even friends, be so passionate about what they do and do it consistently where their presence is not annoying.
Bottom line, their is a way, a formula, in which people go about or choose to start over with a new account or to be a faceless blogger or poster. There is a way to be so quiet that you are so loud.
Hope this sticks.
Try using paragraphs next time. No one's gonna read that.
Mr.BishopThe first part about controversial shit is really important... Social media is amplifying the clickbait bullshit 'yellow journalism' issue. Its turning all media into fucking gossip mags you find at the supermarket.
The problem that I have with the idea that the 'mass' audience is on social media, is that its taking away from actually developing proper readership at a specific site. It would be a lot easier for niche media to develop their own voice, if people were actually willing to visit the site every day. Remember - website revenue is tied to pageviews, so when you don't have regular readership you're forced to only be as successful as the last facebook traffic spike you got.
Its a downward spiral right now. We need a new model to actually support good content.
This is the problem I have with Facebook. Back when I started using Facebook some 8 years ago, the content on the site was a lot different. It seems like it used to be more or less people posting statuses and pictures about whet they were doing, and companies doing the same through their pages. I actually like that aspect of social media. It's all the shitty news and list site links that are turning it into garbage. That and people being so dumb that they believe satirical/fake news sites are real and posting OMG I CANT BELIEVE THIS and getting all riled up about some bullshit someone posted. Website owners can count on people to spread inflammatory bullshit and make them money because there are so many idiots online.
I think all this social media spread yellow journalism crap that Bishop is talking about is also the main thing behind the hysteria over Ebola as well. Anyone who is informed knows that we as citizens of the United States no reason to be worried about contracting Ebola at this time, yet people continue freaking out. A lot of the misinformation seems to be coming from social media.
Just yesterday I saw someone post that we should close our fucking borders to prevent the spread of Ebola because it is now airborne. I commented that I couldn't find any evidence to support her claim and told her to stop spreading misinformation. She said that the "disease control center thing" said so and that was a "pretty good source." Oh, and this extremely intelligent human being has a child too.
I don't think social media as a concept is bad. It's what people are doing with it that is ruining it.
