Hey ns, i dont know much about video cameras so i figured id ask people who do.
found this deal on my local kijiji (basically craigslist) for a Panasonic DVX 100D. I was wondering how it would do shooting urban and some park? like i said i dont know anything about cameras so any help would be appreciated.
Jon_Tafferhe wants $600 for the camera, shotgun mic, 2 batteries and some tapes
That's a fair price I suppose. A little high in my mind, depends on the condition.
I agree with pussyfooter that it is one of the bets SD cams ever made, but is SD. A new GoPro (not suggesting you get one) now shoots 4k for $500. Here is a comparison to the resolutions (SD is 480p)
You said you aren't very experienced with video cameras so something like a GoPro could be good for you if you are interested in that type of thing. Otherwise you could look at getting a used t2i/t3i with a decent lens for around $650.
The other problem with the DVX 100B is the fact that you are recording to tapes. This can be a huge pain in the ass.
pussyfooterwhat kinda camera are you looking for and whats your budget?
just looking for something that can produce high quality videos of skiing and skating. budget is probably around $600-700.
and to whoever said to get a gopro, i know a bunch of people with them and ive used them multiple times, i would just prefer to have something of higher quality

You should check out a smaller handicam or something, sony and pani both make pretty solid little cameras for < 1000. A DVX creates a great 480p image but you'll be disappoint with comparing it to other videos in HD online.
If you wanted to go a dslr route, a t2i is like $250 + a lens or two with a tripod/handle would be nice.

You have no idea what you are talking about haha. What do you define quality by? The resolution the camera shoots? The look of the footage you capture?
The GoPro shoots a resolution way higher than the DVX, at a higher frame rate, and with better colour reproduction. A lot has changed in the 12 years that have passed since the DVX came out.

i know i have no idea what I'm talking about, as I've stated in this thread. i never said that the dvx was higher quality than a gopro, i said i would like to have a camera that shoots better looking video than a gopro. whether that be the dvx or no

The sound out of a gopro also sucks. And its form factor and fixed lens are limiting.
Dude, 600$ for the DVX100B!? Oh, wait, it's 2014. Damn it, if someone had offered me that camera with that price tag attached to it, ten years ago, I'd probably bought it already. Unfortunately, that was after all TEN YEARS AGO. Sure, the shots look cinematic and it's a great 16MM camera, but that doesn't change the fact that the options for resolution are restricted. And you have to shoot on tape, as someone already stated, which will be a pain in the ass for the long run. I'd say you should go for a newer camera that shoots HD, and the GoPro isn't a bad solution.
Of course, this is all based on the idea that you plan to upload shit to YouTube and Vimeo. If you don't, it's really up to you(it kinda is anyway though). But if I were you, I'd look up every single review of every single camera (HD) that fits into your budget. Remember, you don't necessarily have to use every single buck on camera only(preferably not, duh). Get a cheaper camera, and buy some good glass. You should also get a nice rig, maybe even a glide cam.
Hope this helped, if not, go to hell. jk what i meant was: Don't bother reading it all over and over again, trying to understand what I am trying to tell you. Go for the camera that YOU want(don't go for the DVX100B).

OP, look into a used panasonic TM900
The sound doesn't necessarily suck. When it is inside its housing it is indeed pretty lousy. Outside the housing the audio is usable however. It's better than most SLR's in my experience. Not that SLR's have stellar audio to begin with though.
The form factor can be looked at as a benefit too. It's small size and ability to take a lot of abuse allow you to get really creative when you are using it.
The lens is limiting though. But you can change the field of view (without losing resolution) from wide, to medium, to narrow.
panasonic dvx 100b
pros:
-great sd camera
-films skateboarding good with a fisheye
-decent built in mic
-durable
cons:
-big-ish
-uses tapes
-low quality compared to DSLR
-little to no lens options
Canon T3i/ beginner DSLR
pros:
-compact
-high quality photos and video
-lots of lens options
-not likely to have problems/ break down
-uses SD cards
cons:
-costly
-?????
make your decision. sometime i would like to film with a VX/ DVX 100b but i couldn't stand using tapes.
plus you will probably need a capture cam so your heads don't get fucked up. idk what that is but i see it all the time on this skate filmer forum. unless thats only with VX's
It is almost identical to a t3i for video usage. I believe you get a slightly higher bitrate under certain circumstances because it allows for slightly faster SD cards. It is less compatible with magic lantern however, which is a drawback for video usage.
In my opinion, it isn't worth the price difference from a T3i. Hell even a T2i is just as good for video (same sensor).

yeah was just wondering as there is one on sale here for $900 with a glidecam and other accessories

Idk how true this is.
I got my t3i used in perfect condition with battery grip, kit lens and an extra battery for 500$. Although I got a kit lens u could easily find a t3i body only for 350/400$ and buy a 50mm f1.8 for another 100$ in great like new condition. I also live in Canada so it'll probably be even cheaper if you live in the states.

I bought a dvx back in the day at full retail from Costco. Used it for about 5 years then returned it and got every cent back. Pretty good camera if you can get one for free.
