So I attend stoney creek high school.

It has recently been found out by the public that our school district password combes.

This means if you ever connect your device to the school WiFi, wear as only a small majority of students have not, the school district has passwords for thing such as your email, your icloud, your bank account.

Our school district admitted to logging onto teachers personal email as well as students I cloud accounts. A large number of students at another highschool in my district got FELANY charges for child pornography, which was found by teachers logging onto students I cloud accounts with combed passwords.

Several students parents are suing the district. This story has to be heard. It is NO business of our school system to have that much illegal involvment with students personal lives.

I think that the students have all the right in the world to sue the school district. The school district has no right, without reasonable suspicion, to log into students personal accounts.

HOWEVER, one might want to read into the fine print of the wifi/internet student usage agreement that I'm sure each student at stoney creek hs had to sign prior to logging in for the first time.

not to mention (at least from my own personal experiences) when those agreements get passed out in class, everyone just throws them into their bags for their parents to sign when they get home. i never read my user agreements, and im sure tons of people haven't which leads to schools pulling some fucking shady-ass shit.

What schools still have no phone policies? And how are you supposed to research stuff without internet on your computer? Like what else are you gonna do in class when your working on something, type from memory of earlier research?

Serially. My little bro needed an iPad for school, and we were wondering why and what if he preferred actual books and the school would have none of it. They seemed surprised you would prefer paper to a screen... So they simply said it was required and left it at that. I am amazed that technology is this good to have libraries literally in your pocket, but what if a student learns better by highlighting and writing and reading on paper. I sure as hell work better that way, and it hurts my eyes to be on a screen all day (and that is coming from me the engineer that is on a screen all day regardless).

either way that icloud exploit was patched looooong ago.

at the start of this year 100% of students at my old high school have iPads which they keep for the entire school year and can take home etc. I would be so sketched about looking at porn or checking NS on those..

they started with a couple AP classes my junior and senior year and have expanded since then I guess.

anyone who shares nudes on their email is fucking retarted. I dont agree with the school for combing passwords because thats a load of shit, but lets not get our titties in a jam because kid couldnt get into his gmail account quick enough that he logged into at school that had illegal things in it. at least he didnt fax it over or anything

This isn't even possible. Passwords are sent using SSL encryption, the school wouldn't be able to get unencrypted passwords to use to get into people's accounts as they travel over their network.

Maybe your dumbshit classmates should stop sending nude photos to each other when they're underage.

I graduated in 2013, so it's not that new. The school I went to did not have a library or a computer lab. I think it was like 2006 or 2007 that some municipalities required that high schools provided every student with a laptop and wifi at school. In Sweden we have a very strict policy about school being free, so you can't demand that students have computers and internet connectivity at home, therefore this was a smart choice.

And to the whole helpless thing and me not being able to do anything without internet or computers, I'd like to say that this was school-work. We learned about the same things you learn about in other schools, we just knew how to find information easier and quicker. A big part of everything we did was also critical thinking, questioning different sources of information (like Wikipedia obviously). Using a computer for typing and finding information doesn't mean that you can't survive in a power outage or be in the outdoors or something. It's like saying since you use ski lifts and sleds to get up the mountains instead of walking/touring, you don't know anything about avalanches. They are different things entirely.

Even if they did listen to the network traffic, they would only be able to get login info from the non encrypted data. i.e. http traffic, and it would take a lot of time and energy to process and extract the wanted information from a public wifi logs, even if you were looking for something specific.

But most of the websites you have an account on nowadays force the https usage. So, as I'm sure your school wouldn't have the skills, or the means to hire the skills, cracking that encryption would require, it seems highly unlikely to me.

HTTPS stripping attacks would be easier, but even this, I just don't see how or why would an high school do that.

I remember in high school if you did not sign it and return it by the date posted, you would get a referral/detention. So basically, you have absolutely no choice but to sign it even if you don't agree with it.

This is fucked up. Whether it's legal or not doesn't really matter. It's still morally wrong to log on to other people's personal accounts without reason.

Schools have gone so far over the boundary these days it truly is scary. This is just next level inappropriate for ANYONE who runs a public institution. I would sue the crap out of the school.

I bet it was in small writing in one sentence in one of those stupid contracts they make you sign prior to starting school and if you don't they suspend you. Hope that administration goes down. It boggles my mind how smoeone could go from a chill high school kid, through college, and then eventually become a cruel administrator combing passwords to go out of their way to arrest people.

By the sounds, if the power went out, your entire school would be indeed fucked. All that critical thinking doesn't seem to have done much for you because those last couple of sentences were pure idiocy on so many levels. I think Sweden needs to re-up their educational standards.

USUALLY the schools that "require" it are often private schools and if you can afford a private school odds are you can afford an ipad/tablet and or some type of computer.

I go to a private high school it's not required there but it's allowed and most kids have some form of technology to "take notes" with.

My school would not have been fucked if the power went out, but we would not have been able to study as much, that's true.

Those last sentences are pure idiocy how exactly? I just think that knowledge and how that knowledge is required are two different things. Just because my knowledge didn't come from a book doesn't mean that it's not good knowledge. Just as someone who uses skilifts to go skiing can have as much knowledge about mountains and avalanches as a person who don't. Modern technology is not always bad, and unnecessary conservatism is almost always bad.

I find it really strange that so many of you have such a strong reaction on my first post in this thread. Weird how truly different it can be.

Im not trying to defend anyone. I don't know the situation. But it's highly likely that the kids with child porn had nudes of their boyfriends/ girlfriends.

It's not like they were 50 year old men/ women with pictures of 14 year olds. It doesn't make it right, but it's not really uncommon for teenagers to have nudes...let's be honest.
