In-ear vs on-ear headphones

What are the advantages/ disadvantages of each? Which do you guys prefer? What do you use while skiing i for some reason don't like the feeling of over ear headphones with a helmet, so i use normal apple ones.

in ear buds are going to provide you with better isolation (usually around 10db), and hopefully better sound quality. the klipshe s4 and r6 buds are what i use. also, due to the isolation, you wont be pumping in as much Sound Pressure Levels (spl), saving your hearing, and increasing the lengths of time you can listen.
on ear headphones wont have any isolation, will probably hurt your ear from the pressure after long periods, and just dont work as well with helmets. due to no isolation and being on ear, your volume will be up, increasing the spl, and over long periods of time, stressing and potentially causing harm to your hearing.
