The main things you want to look for are sealed hubs and bottom brackets, double wall rims, and 25/9 gearing. after that, its hard to go wrong with most bikes. dont worry about bike weight, and dont ride brakeless. check craigslist/pinkbike for people selling used bmx bikes in your area, because you can get way better bikes for a cheaper price when theyre used (usually a lot of aftermarket parts too). DansComp.com and Albes.com are the biggest online bmx stores, but id go with a used bike over a new complete.

check for a local bst (buy sell trade) group, maybe even specializing in bmx! lots of kids ride for a while, but resell great bikes for less than retail. happy riding man!

Gearing - Don't worry about 25/9 gearing. Figure out what works best for you. I preferred 28/9 and 30/9 over 25/9. I like to actually move when I pedal.

Brakeless - same as gearing. Completely up to the individual, but if you are going to go brakeless, make sure you can control yourself and you are aware of your surroundings. If you can't do that, don't go brakeless.

Custom vs. complete - Pretty much any complete is going to be pretty decent these days. Look for 100% chromoly frames/forks/bars. Most frames these days are worth upgrading the parts over time. You can't get a pretty decent used bike, but just remember buying a used bike (especially a bmx) is like buying a used WRX. It's probably going to be beat to hell. Bmx's lead hard, abused lives so be careful if going used.

I figure 25/9 is a good place to start as its pretty standard on most bikes these days, you can go bigger or smaller from there. Def agree with you on the brakeless point though, I know a ton of kids getting into the sport that see pros riding brakeless and think its the cool thing to do, but they have no bike control and it becomes dangerous for them and the people around them.

I'll stand by my point about buying used though, you can get way better stuff for the same price. Just give the bike a solid once over to make sure there are no cracks, dents, or missing spokes, and you shouldnt have any problems. Bmx stuff is built to take a beating, and as a beginner you probably wont be going too hard on your first bike.

KINKS are great bikes. i have a 2013 Launch.

Like stated above: sealed hubs and crank. weight is also key.

everything else is just preference.
