Canadian caesar vs american bloody mary.

In my biased, Canadian opinion, bloody mary's are a sorry excuse for a drink. it makes me sick that people in America have to suffer through such a shitty drink when all they really are missing out on is one or two ingredients. how someone could enjoy a bloody mary is beyond me. a sunday caesar with brunch is a hangover cure that nothing can rival. you can put pepperoni, smoked salmon, beef jerky, in a caesar. really whatever the fuck floats your boat that you will soon be drunkly piloting, can go into a caesar. it is truly an ever-changing wonder of the world.

now, I've been to the states a number of times, but the first time i was in Vegas, i ordered a bloody mary to see if it compares to a good old Canadian caesar. I was offended when i took my first sip. it was terrible, i could barely finish it, but i paid upwards of 12 dollars for it, so i stomached it. so bland, lacking the complexity that a caesar brings to my taste buds. but maybe it was just a one off shitty drink, so i tried one at the next bar, it was again, shit. tasted like watered down ketchup with some vodka.

and if you're a younger Canadian, just getting into drinking, and you don't like caesars, don't worry, we have all been there. there will be a glorious day when your mind is opened to the grandeur of the caesar.

why hasn't the caesar caught on in the states? is it because of the clamato juice? if we renamed clamato to something like glory juice or something regarding eagles, freedom and automatic weapons, would americans be more keen to try Canada's most famous cocktail?

this is retarded many bloodies include clamato, and by the sounds of it, I doubt the dash of clam water makes it that much superior, because bloodies have every other fucking ingredient listed. Garnish is the same thing - many bloodies include insane garnishes. Google Wisconsin Bloody Mary, Sobelmans just down the road from me garnishes one with a entire fried chicken.

You do know that there are tons of ways to make a bloody or caesar or whatever you're mad about.

Theyre pretty much the same drink, I make my bloodies almost exactly as you posted.

You ordered from the wrong place. I put almost all from your pick in my bloodied. They can include any of the following:

salt, pepper, green and red tabasco sauce, sriracha, lime, Worcestershire, bacon, tomato juice, vodka, celery, rim shot made of spices and celery salt, shrimp, tomatoes, green beans, olives, banana peppers, and more.

I think the only difference is the clamato. Although, some here drink that too. All bars have clamato. People order red beers, too.

Obviously the Caesar is better because it's like an institution up here and as a result people actually care about making it good. Down in the USA, a bloody mary is just a drink. Nothing particularly special about it, some people might order one once in a while but it's hardly a go-to.

Here, it's on every menu. It's a drink special for at least one night of the week. People work on figuring out interesting garnishes, the right combination of spices for the caesar rim, what additional ingredients to add to give it a bit of different flavour (incidentally, horseradish is pretty good, but beer is bad). With all that effort and time spent on the drink it had better be good.

trust me, I know there are tons of ways to make them. I've probably had 30 or 40 different takes on caesars.

and you would have to be a fool to believe that caesars and bloody marys are pretty much the same. the clamato adds so much to the drink. if any of you guys are in whistler i would be happy to bring a caesar skeptic out for some of whistler's finest caesars. it would be a life changing day for your tastebuds and your liver.

though I just recently found out that clamato is clam and anchovie tomato juice and that is kinda fucked up. but its still great.

they aren't the same thing! why can't you guys get your head around the fact that a caesar and a bloody mary are different. caesar is made with clamato and bloody mary's are made with tomato. the difference is that the main ingredient is a totally different juice.

Yes, I already said that.

Although some people order their bloody marys with clamato, we just don't order a "Canadian caesar" when we do.

If I go downstairs right now and walk into the bar in this building, or the one across the street (which has 3 varieties of caesar on its menu) I'll see about half a dozen of them. On a Wednesday afternoon.

I don't think you're quite understanding the scale we're talking about here.

Your problem is you don't know what the fuck you're talking about because you've had 2 shitty bloodies in the gigantic and incredibly diverse USA. What you are describing as a Canadian Caesar is almost exactly the same thing as an average US bloody at a decent bar.

I don't know much of a difference between the two.


I will say how I like my version of a caesar though. I like it with beer instead of vodka. Ditch the Worcestershire sauce and calm juice. Instead of celery I like spicy beans. For the hot sauce I like using a bunch of tobasco(way more than 2 dashes).

ive had more than 2 bloody marys, probably had around 10, all at different bars, you would think i would run into a decent one by then. I've had them in vegas, san diego, some town in oregon and seattle. im sorry but they just dont compare. i know what the fuck im talking about. if you think they are the same thing you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

Here's my most objective take:

I did a quick wiki on the history. The Caesar was invented in Calgary. Which at its core is clamato, celery, worcestershire, lime, hot sauce, and vodka with celery salt rim. It was invented in 1969. The bloody mary, invented one way or another in the U.S.--there are conflicting stories-- about 40 years prior, includes a wide range of ingredients and is referred to as the world's most complicated drink.

It sounds to me like the U.S. has copied Canada when they include clamato instead of tomato juice. And Canada has copied the U.S. when including anything outside of the classic Caesar ingredient list.

It sounds to me like Canada was the first place to use clamato in a bloody mary. But bloody marys existed far prior to caesars.

Sounds like you guys can run into a good one with gourmet ingredients in just about any bar? Here- you're either a local and know who makes good ones, or you ask a local "who makes the best bloody marys" and you gotta go to one of those places. Your average dive bar isn't going to have gourmet ingredients here.

I could be wrong, but I find it hard to believe I'm going to walk into a dive bar in Canada (a random one, not one known for their caesars-- we're not talking hipster dive), order a Caesar, and get anything other than: vodka, clamato, Worcestershire, hot sauce, celery, and lime. Am I wrong?

That's because you took a bloody mary, added clamato, and named it Canadian. That's why you wont see "bloody mary" on the menu. I'm betting if someone wanted a bloody up there, they'd say "can I have a Caesar, but with tomato juice rather than clamato" the same as someone here wanting a canadian caesar would say "can I get a bloody mary with clamato."

ill have to make a trip down to the states and make a point to find a couple of bars that are known for their bloody marys then. i guess the average bar cant make a good one. cause ive been to 10 or 12 and ordered them and none of them were very good. im interested to see how they compare.

I'm a HUGE bloody mary fan and have had it both ways with the spicy mix and with clamato. Definitely give the clamato a try before you knock it because it's pretty good as well.

mmmm that shit is so good! had some in green bay at game and wow. their bloody marys were awesome and they give you beer with it. cant go wrong with that

First off, I've never ever ever been a fan of chasers in any form with any drink. It's just how I roll but why would a bloody mary need one? I was blown away that they made my bloody mary and then put down a pint of an awesome IPA right in front of me to go with it. My logic was...well, shit, I'm getting drunk today now aren't I?
