Secret Santa - hand off

Hey everyone - I am sad to say, but this year I will not be organizing the annual Secret Santa exchange. I have been spending a lot less time on Newschoolers, and really won't have enough time to do it :(

I am looking for someone who has participated in previous years to take it over. It's unfortunately not a simple process. Organizing a 150+ person secret santa from 3 different countries is not easy haha. The 3rd 'country' being anyone not in the US or Canada.

I would hate to see it go away. Even though its had its failures (people signing up, getting a gift, but being a doucher and not sending one to their santa) -- its being wildly successful. I have seen some amazing gifts be gifted! And its always been great fun.

So, if you are interested in being in charge - let me know! I will tell you my process, give you templates for the threads, and help in any way I can. I also want to participate! So lets get the ball rolling, as I usually use part of October for sign up and have everyone matched up and handed out early November.

I had a great experience with the Secret Santa (in many ways - preparing the gift, hearing back from the recipient about it, and opening something fun that I received). It would be sad to see it go away.

How much of a time commitment would you say it is to set up and administer? E.g. you could say you spent x hours a day on it for y days, something like that. This information could help people figure out if they're up for the task...

I have never participated, but I would like to. If you can't find anyone else who has done it before who will organize it I actually wouldn't mind. I like this idea a lot and can't believe I have never heard about it until now.

NS secret santa is the best. I would volunteer if I wasnt going to be gone the entire holiday season. Somebody take this over!

I'm pretty sure I was your secret Santa last year haha, and I really hope someone takes this over, cause I've had a really good experience with it in the past!

cool i haven't heard about this secret santa i'd love to hear what its about like do you send your santa a gift ski related or can it be anything also when does it take place cause im gone on vacation for a bit of christmas break

Once you sign up (it's a commitment) you get access to the cult where you post biographies and demographics. You chose where you want your gift sent...school, home, parents house. My suggestion is always your permanent address. But whatever you want. No one is paired, meaning you get someone, but they get someone else, and so on. No two people have each other. You buy/make/put together your gift, wrap it, add a nice note and mail it.

But seriously, it's uncanny and depressing that this thread would come up today. I was just wondering earlier today about when ol' snwbrdmlf would be rollin around with Secret Santa. I was uber bummed that I missed out last year because of a clerical error, but the year before that was awesome. I may be interested in carrying on the flame of NS Secret Santa...

NS Secret Santa is killer! I get the weirdest responses when I explain it to friends. I was lucky in that I both sent AND received a gift. Just goes to show how cool of a community NS. I really hope someone picks this up. Sadly with school and 3 jobs I don't think I'd be reliable enough to make it happen.

We should do a "buy in" of sorts.

If you want to be In the secret Santa, then you paypall the organizer some money. Like $10?. Then when the person says they get your gift, you get your money refunded.

It Could get rid of a lot of the no senders I think.

ah you're talking some kind of escrow? like a security deposit? That would add some security but be a whole other layer of complicated.

I remember participating a few years ago and really enjoyed it, hope someone capable can take the reins.

It would work in theory but it'd be a serious ordeal for one person to organize and refund a couple hundred $10 transactions

I would be happy to help out with the organization this year but I don't have enough free time to take on the whole thing by myself
