Candle wax on skis?

While you can melt paraffin wax onto your bases and save some money, it won't really do all that much for your sintered bases. Proper ski wax has special hydrocarbons and/or fluorocarbons in it that help repel water and this is one element that helps you glide. And you want these attributes to penetrate the base and stay in the base as long as possible.

If you melt paraffin wax onto your bases, sure it might keep them from drying out but that is only one small role that proper ski wax plays. And if you are going to go through all of the hassle of hot waxing, scraping, and brushing you might as well use the proper wax for the job.

No, Im not going to scrape them. its just that i didn't do anything for my last skis in summer and they got all dried out. Now i have got new skis and want to care about them nicely, but i haven't got so much money left to buy a proper ski wax. :) Thanks for the reply.

I don't quite understand you logic.

Why would you buy expensive new skis and then go and put candle wax on them instead of just buying proper wax?

You don't need super fancy Swix wax or some type of special race wax for storage. A block of wax for storage would be like

less than $10.

No point in taking a risk (although small) to save $10 but potentially damage skis worth hundreds of dollars. Just doesn't make sense.

not all ski wax is the same, so watch out. some candle wax is not made of parafin and that will really damage your skis

Yeah this. My shop sells small bricks of wax for like $5. Not the biggest bricks they make but it lasts a good month and it is swix wax so it's oretty good

For those of you looking for a 'budget' wax, here is the golden standard that I have found.

This stuff is fucking bomber. 20bux for a 3/4lb brick (which is more than you get from swix in their largest size all for often 10 dollars less). In my experience, the Hertels wax is far Superior to anything I have used from Swix. Since its dirt cheap I go through the stuff like candy.
