Ok so any input helps. Didn't searchbar cuz I don't have time for that. I need dimensions, angles, etc for an ideal DFD. If you drew me a plan for a DFD you would be rewarded with millions of internets. Thanks guys :)
This DFD will be made of metal, preferably about 10 feet for each section. But I need angles. And I need to know what length the legs should be.
I strongly recommend 12-12.5 degrees for the kinks.
Everything else is more what youre into. I feel 12 feet min is good fkr the downs. 14 is prime imo. You can make the second down longer. Can rock a long flat or short flat. Seen a few popping up eith a flat twice as long as the down ie 12'x24'x12'.
Personally i like a short kink. Not quite a pump kink but not a huge flat. Im a big fan of 6'. You have enough time to set but it has a more fluid flow than 8.
Only built one so far and it was 14'x6'x14' at 12 degrees.
I cant give you a sketchup but i can sketch something on paper if you need help.
Also for the base you might want to keep the bottom one straigh line if youre going to want to use it with little snow or in tbe summer. 2 ways to do this. Go at the same angle as your kinks and make the top kink lower and bottom higher or rock a differrnt angle where the ends are the same height and the kink lifts up. You might want to rock the firstif youre planning on using it as a flat up flat or fdf especially in summer.
I made one in high school that was 20 ft long total, each section equal, so 6.67 ft per section. It was fun, but definitely a bit short. 10 feet per section would be sick, or like the dude above me said, mix up the lengths and have a little bit of a shorter flat section. Also, I went with 20 degree angles, which was borderline too steep. Again, like the dude above said, go about 12-15 degrees with it and you'll be golden.
As for the lengths of the legs, it totally depends on what kind of hill/snowpack you have to set it up on. I went with all equal at 1.5 ft (if i remember correctly). Definitely add some feet on the bottom; C-channel works great if you can find some.
There's more pics/vids in my profile if you are interested. Here's one picture though (middle legs not touching the ground).
How sharp the kink angle feels depends on the length of the first down. I usually go with 15 degrees and then 12 8 16 for the lengths. If you had a longer or shorter first down you would probably want to adjust the kink angle accordingly. Also depends on how steep you set up the rail.
If its your only dfd then mellow is probably better. If you already have a few then its nice to have one that is a bit more gnarly.
As far as the legs its always good to design around materials. If you are skirting a rail half a sheet of ply is a pretty good height. You want the legs to extend beyond that. If its a dfd i like to make the leg at the second kink longer. This helps with melting out and not having to make the snow match the rail perfectly.
I built this one last year with a 16 degree kink and it was still pretty mellow. I think it was 10 7 12 because that was all the 4" scrap steel I could find. Smallish but still fun. Everything looks big in the shop but smaller once its on snow.
theabortionatorI strongly recommend 12-12.5 degrees for the kinks.
Oh man... first DFD (or maybe FDF?) we built when I was working park we went with 25 degrees. It was barely slide able it was so fucking gnarly.
I mean sure if you're trying to survive a street rail that's all good... but something you want to do some tricks on that 12-15 degrees is perfect. I was always a fan of 15 so that you could feel the kinks a bit... I felt anything less was almost too mellow.
