Freeski lessons

I would say definitely look into the legal side of things but the idea is awesome.

at my mountain they have freeski instructors through the company of course. We only have like 2 guys that ski park but i did them last year and i picked up on stuff really fast.

It's definitely a good move on you but i'm sure there's gonna be a legal issue. I mean if the resort see's a group of kids getting taught how to ski by some dude, they're gonna want to cash in on it you know.

I'm sure in the end you'll have to get a job through the resort and teach kid that way but in the end you're still getting paid to ski and teaching kids how to shred so it's kind of a win-win.

...depending on how many people you'll be teaching at once, of course. If you've got 3 gapers in tow, that's pretty inconspicuous, especially if you do your payment subtly. I'd bet you could get away with it and no one would care. If you're thinking of lining up 12 gapers and running train on the flat box, then you might draw a little more attention to what you're doing.

and the mountain doesn't offer freestyle lessons currently. there are some clubs/teams that do it that are unaffiliated with the mountain, i'm pretty sure they've gotten permission though.

You'd have them sign a waiver, definitely. And their parents, who would likely be the ones paying you. I'm sure there's sample stuff online, but waiver is for sure necessary here.

For what it's worth, it will also help you convince slightly hesitant clients if you have some sort of first aid certification. Obviously ski patrol is the main emergency option, but being semi-competent with respect to that stuff will be very reassuring to worried parents.

I would say that wherever you are going to do this they would definitely not like it. Ski instructors working under the table been arrested before.

It's probably possible, but you will be also be open for a legal shitstorm if someone gets hurt and sues you.


Sorry to be a downer, but I wouldn't risk it.

I thought about this for a little bit and I think what you could probably do is talk to the resort and ask them if they would be interested in starting a program for younger kids who want to get into freeskiing. I know around here we don't do too much of that and I wish we would. It would surpass your initial idea of just doing it on your own but it would be really cool for you, the resort, and the kids to have a program like this. Also, you wouldn't need to worry about the business/ legal troubles going through the resort and you could just work for the program. It would definitely look good on a resume to say you started a program like that for kids.

Just typed that out and then reread the op... But seriously, you should give it some thought to start up something like that if you can. It's a great idea with a lot of opportunities especially if you're from a smaller resort!

I think it woud be a good idea, but makes sure you make them sign a release waiver or you just asking to get sued.

What do you mean by private ski hill? If it's a regular ski area then I don't see why it would be an issue, if it's one of those private ones that you need membership for or whatever then it could be an issue. If it's not the latter, just look at the terms on your lift ticket/season pass. Worst that happens is they ask you to stop, assuming there are no terms stating you can't.
