so when i worked at theater, we did the show peter pan. so we brought in a whole flying rig for the actors. A fly rig is basically a big pulley system. One end is connected to the actor, and the other end is offstage, controlled simply by a deck hand pulling the end of the rope. Some systems are 1 to 1, others are 2 or 3 to 1 pull ration.

This particular chosen rig was 1 to 1. on our down time, myself and another guy decided to play teeter totter. I went on stage and stood on top of a set piece to get me 5 or 6 feet off the deck, and while holding the cable above my head that point was easily 13 feet off the deck.

Offstage, the other guy stood on top of a 6 foot ladder and held the rope above his head. so his holding point was 13 feet off the deck.

So once he jumped down and landed pulling his weight all the way down to the deck, i shot up to at least 25 feet in the air, he would then use my counterweight to pull himself up and jump at the same time, sending him up in the air.

it was one of the funnest, yet scariest things i've ever done. haha.
