Wrangle the Chute is now a 4* event. I'm bummed to see the old comp go to the wayside but this next evolution is going to be insanity for sure.

2 bad years of snow and kirkwood gets the axe. That or their shitty owner doesn't fucking care.

So to answer your question, In short no, you can not qualify for the FWT by just doing 2* events. Winning a 2* gives you the same points as coming 19th in a 4*.

Only your top 3 results through out the season count regardless of how many events you do.

You;d have to do pretty well in a 2* or average in a couple of 2*s to then qualify for 3* events, and the same again to enter a 4*. Or get to know organisers to gain wild cards. Or sometimes you can be lucky and get into 3*s without a seeding.

Registering gives those with highest ranking priority, then first comes first served basis for the unseeded riders if there are still places left.

Thanks! I read that page and am still unclear on part of it. I get how to qualify for the FWT, but you said that you have to do well in 2* to qualify for 3*, and do well in 3* to qualify for 4*. Does this typically all happen in one season for someone attempting to qualify for the FWT? Like they compete in a 2* early on in the winter, do well, then compete in a 3* later that winter, do well, then do a 4* that spring?

If the above is correct (competing in the 2*, 3*, and 4* the same year), would the skier sign up for the seeding list for all of those competitions right when registration opens, and then whether or not they get to compete in the 3*/4* later that year will be determined after the early season 2*/3* results are in? Then it would have to be pretty short notice who does and does not get to compete, but it was my understanding that someone can go compete in the FWQ then do FWT the next year if they do well enough, not that it's a 3 year process just to qualify.

Out of personal experience, I'd say 2 years is realistic, whilst 3 would be normal as the first year is more gaining experience than anything.

If you did well in the early comps, then those results can get you into later 4* events. It depends where you are in the world as to what opportunities you get.

So for example verbier freeride week is 3 2* events in 1 week, and that is one fo the first comps of the season... If you did well there with 3 good 2* results you could probably go straight to a 4* event. (and they have 3 end of season in europe, so in theory if you did well in those 3 you could indeed qualify for the FWT)

I have found due to crashes/missing lines etc. for myself its been a 3 year process.
I did 2 2*s + a 4* by wild card my first season and did ok.
Last year i did 2 2*s a 3* and a 4* and crashed 3/4 and went to NZ this summer for a 3* again crashed.
It's all personal. I wouldnt expect FWT entry in 2 years, but its possible if you are consitant.

As regards to entries, Comps open for reg like 2 months before the comp. They announce start lists 2-3 weeks before the comp.. so yes everything is very short notice which sucks. and your points count almost straight away. if you compete mid Jan, those points would count to enter a comp beginning of Feb etc.

Thanks for the info! Have you qualified for FWT yet, or is that your goal?

Purely hypothetical situation, it would work like this, correct?:
2* comp February 1st. 3* comp February 22nd. 4* comp March 16th. All comps are open for registration in January. I have never competed before. I register for all 3 comps in January. In mid January I find out that I get to compete in the 2* because it's not full. The on February 1st I compete in the 2* and get first place. A few days later, the list of accepted competitors for the 3* comp is released, and I qualify. Then on February 22nd I compete in that comp and again get first place. Then a few days later, the 4* list of accepted competitors is announced, and I again qualify. I then go compete in the 4* and get first place. I then qualify for the FWT the very next year.

I know it's very unrealistic for stuff to be timed right and for a first year competitor to get first in that many comps, especially a 4*, but it's just a hypothetical situation. If the dates fell in that way, and I did get first in the comps, that is how it would work, correct?

Oh and I should add I know that qualifying for the FWT takes into account points from the three events, so maybe one 4* alone isn't enough to get enough points to qualify for FWT. So let's just say, again purely hypothetically, there's two more 4* events in late March and early April and I get first in both of those as well.

You have the right idea, but as for qualifying for the FWT you would need 3 good results if not wins in 4*events

or 2 good 4* results and a 3* win

It's my goal... my first year was just to test the waters as wasn't sure id want to compete after the whole reason i quit racing was how serious it was. Last year I went for it a bit more but lots of crashes.

This year only bothering with 4*s and maybe do a couple of 2/3*s for fun.

Since you are able to do 4* this year without qualifying in 2*/3* first, I take it that the seeding list takes into account earlier comps the same year, as well as the previous year's comps? What if someone qualifies for and competes in 4*s, then takes a year off. When they come back to it do they need to go back to 2* or will they still qualify for 4* from several years earlier?

a result is valid for 1 year, so although not counted for your 2015 ranking, it will take into account results from last year to the day.

so a 4* done 16th March 2014 is valid until 16th March 2015.

Unfortunately if you are out early season it will be like starting again with the current system in place. If your injured after getting a couple of results it's not such a set back.

I am pretty new to big mountain skiing in general, I just moved to Utah from the midwest less than a year ago so I'm probably not ready for 4* and FWT yet, but I am planning to enter the Collegiate Freeride Series (2*) this coming spring.
