10 things you need to know to become a skibum.

Hey guys,

So the deal is I'm writing for a Danish ski blog, and I've been thinking about making a list of of 10 things you definitely need to know before you travel away for the season. I have some ideas myself, and I would consider myself a rookie skibum, but i would really like some input from some of you guys who have been on several season around the world.

I thinking funny lines like this one from Teton Gravity: You’ll eventually fuck yourself up pretty good. No matter how cautious you are, it’s not a matter of if you get hurt, but when. Also, Mommy’s not there to take care of you. In fact, Mommy is probably pissed off that you threw your life away and became a ski bum.


But just shoot away guys, It'll be awesome with some more views on the subject.

Ps: I saw a video in here probably a month ago where a Swedish guy talks about his skibum life. I can't seem to find it anywhere, any of you guys have the link?

1. Move to the mountains
2. Go skiing

Rice and Pasta are way cheaper. HOtdogs for protien, but bulk out with rice and pasta.

Also, sleeping in your car with no heat is cold as FUCK. Do not underestimate how cold it is, and how hard it is to dry your gear.

rice and pasta will make you more hungry sooner, but are cheaper so its a balance. peanut butter is always good and underestimated.

If you're a guy, don't expect to get laid. It may happen, but don't expect it to.

If you're a girl, please don't go out with shitty guys. You can pick pretty much anyone in town, take advantage of it, don't go out with that one sketchy/lame dude no one likes.

Why? The park is for everyone. They get their joy out of that, so we should respect them. They need to learn. Everyone started doing that. So just give them some space

haha exactly. i figured out after a few months of ski bumming that there is rarely a reason to be broke, honestly it is so fucking easy to make boatloads of money at night in ski towns...without a college degree. A few pieces of advice- never ever work a day shift, have a really good off season job (planting trees, trimming weed, harvesting produce) always avoid signing a lease, never stay in one place for more than 4 or 5 months, learn how to get creative with your living situation, pull bitches back to your boiler room, closet or just dump of a crib, adapt to all housing situations, enjoy everyday on the hill, work hard ski harder and party the hardest, document the crazyness, pray for snow and always try and have some money stored away for when shit hits the fan (inevitable when your leading a nomadic lifestyle based around a dangerous activity).

Pretty sure it goes something like this

1. Alaska is the holy grail of skiing.
2. Real ski bums travel to Alaska every spring
3. Real ski bums buy a van/truck to live out of in Alaska.
4. Real ski bums own a sled, or have a close friend with a sled.
5. Real ski bums have hiked over 4 hours for turns
6. Real ski bums ski even on the most heinous days
7. Real ski bums have frostbite somewhere
8. Real ski bums have cuddled with their buddy (no homo) to stay warm
9. Real ski bums will eat/drink anything
10. Real ski bums go heli skiing

After working and living through ski seasons in New Zealand and Colorado I've learned that only 2 things matter when it comes to moving to a mountain town.

1. Decide WHY you're going! (ski all the time, develop into sponsorship/do comps, party and ski, start a career etc)

2. Commit everything you've got to making it happen the way you want it to!

On another note: there's always other bums who need help with rent. Hallways and couches are available for a price

Drive an early 90s Toyota Tacoma with a mismatched topper and plentiful rust and learn to fix it so when it gets so cold your hoses start to crack you know where to start. Tools and recovery gear are your friend. If you know how to pull a car out of a ditch, sometimes the guy who you rescued will buy you beer! I saved a Saturn from a snowbank last winter and the kid gave me a bottle of Even Williams...oh the JOY!

Always keep a copy of Warren Miller's Wine, Women and Skis. Trust me, it'll always make you feel better.

Pickup hitchhikers, strangers in ski towns are just friends you haven't met yet. You never know who you're gonna find. Do this unless you're in Reno, he's holding a bloody machete or some shit.

If you can afford it and care for him, adopt yourself a nice fuzzy rescue mutt. He's probably a vagrant at heart too. Chicks love dogs, everyone loves dogs, you love dogs. Plus, you can walk around aimlessly when you have nowhere else to go because no one ever questions a guy walking a dog. Need a couch to crash on for a night? Hell you're everyone's best friend because your dog is.

Get a big ass thermos. Hot food doesn't come around to often so keep it hot! Plus, walking your dog with a thermos full of coffee looks innocent to wealthy resort goers when it's really just a homeless guy with a jug of Canadian Hunter and a mangy mutt looking for cheap grub.
