so i'm not really a guy who gets passionate about current issues and shit like that, but this is something that i am pretty passionate about.

salmon farms on the west coast of BC are fucking up the wild stocks and our wonderful Harper government is covering it up.

farmed salmon is fucking disgusting and people need to know the truth about it. diseases and parasites run through entire farms and spread into the wild stock and some of these diseased fish are reaching our food supply.

I have been fishing BC's rivers around the whistler area and i have witnessed the prespawn deaths of dozens of salmon with my own eyes. in my opinion, wild salmon is one of BC's most important natural resources, and we need to do a better job protecting it. next time you buy salmon, please make sure you are buying wild salmon. it tastes 10000 times better than farmed and you are supporting a sustainable industry that employee's thousands of BC fishermen.

this documentary is incredibly well done and it opens your eyes to the damage the BC salmon farming industry is doing to wild salmon. I know its an hour long and not many of you guys will watch it, but i encourage you to check it out if you have the time. i hope that my children and my children's children will be able to enjoy salmon fishing on our rivers for years to come.

I have never supported farmed salmon. Mind you I also live in BC and learned the evils of farmed salmon early.

OP you forgot to mention that the salmon that they are using for farming isn't native to the land and has been mixing with the native species and fucking everything up. I'm just going to assume it probably mentions it in the documentary. I have grown up in BC and know all about the fishing stuff. I come from a family that fishes regularly.

Yea most is atlantic. Worked in an upscale fish market during college...
- farm raised (usually atlantic 99% of the time)
- naturally raised ( fucking up oceans - pens in the ocean holding fish produce a leaner fish little more orange as well)
- wild - totally different density / more orange / much less oily, fat than the other two

Also have seen albino salmons which taste amazing and Sockeyes are another type of salmon that is in danger due to habitat breaching and messing with the flows of the water combined with over fishing

That's like saying farmed chickens grow up in a natural environment because its outside. No farmed salmon ever grow up in a natural environment. They probably consider it natural because its wet.

Another difference between farmed fish and other meats like beef and chickens is that there isn't really a wild population of cows or chickens to fuck up. Farmed salmon isn't healthy for you or the environment so it's a double shit whammy.

thats just not true...if you buy farm raised salmon from a high quality reputable fish market chances are its very good quality and good for you. The problems are from 99% of the people out there buy there fish at the local super market from there POS fish section. Go into a local fish market (if you live near the ocean) and talk to someone about it..you would surprised how much you can learn

Vegetables; you dumbass? You've never even tried to learn about proteins and other eating habits.
I eat fish and occasionally some meats but its very seldom. I especially don't use the "meat vs veggie protein" excuse to not be educated.

exactly it only takes one non-native fish to get loose or non-native bacteria/parasites to flourish and spread to ruin an entire ecosystem. Look up the snake head and Asian Carp invasion. Presuming you haven't already heard of what happened there. I know it wasn't exactly the fault of fish farmers. It was more so the case of uneducated people, who just thought it would be a good idea to release non-native fish into a habitat that they had no idea the fish would thrive in.

Its actually cheaper to buy fresh organic vegetables, a pound of organic meat, organic pasta, olive oil, mixed organic rice, and cook it yourself than to buy the NS/college diet of hot pockets, potatochips, raman noodles and frozen chicken nuggets.

Not to mention if you hunt you get 100+ lbs of fresh organic meat you can freeze for the price of a bullet.

TLDR: Organic-healthy is just as cheap if you're not an inbred retard and try to eat steak every day.

No. Hunting is like the most expensive thing you can do. At least here. Maybe in Canada you can just get an old gun somewhere, buy bullets and go shoot anything, but then there might be other problems, similar to the problems with the salmon?

But organic and healthy can be very cheap if you're smart and know where to look. Also cooking and planning, but that's not very hard.

About the salmon thing, watched the documentary, and feeling disgusted. Farmed salmon from Norway, which is what I've eaten forever, might be a bit better, but fuck. This is stupid.

woah.. man. I am not an inbred retard, I have a full time job and I have trouble affording grassfed meat. Usually I go for the grassfed ground because it is affordable (same price as standard). You say buy 100lbs of meat like all of us have an extra $400 freezer laying around. Just buying "organic" veggies is not going to completely solve the problem OP is referring to. If you do not know where the veggies are coming from, that disconnect is still there. Plus, the conditions that need to be set to be labeled organic are becoming looser. So, you're not solving the worlds problem by spending an extra dollar per avocado...

to derail a little.. It is crazy that people will buy lesser quality food to save money. Food is fuel for your body. But, if you knew a gas station was watering down their gas to save you money people wouldn't go there.

Price of a bullet, plus the price of the gun, gas to get out to your hunting spot, price for all your licenses and tags, price to process the meat. Hunting is a big time investment. Then you need a freezer to put all that meat into. And that freezer isn't cheap to run. It all adds up.
Not saying hunting isn't awesome, just saying its a lot more expensive and more complicated than going out and shooting an animal.

I am at work and will watch the video later... But, what I always find crazy is the trout that get stocked in local rivers have different color meat. They are white verses the orange they turn after eating bugs. Not to mention the meat is shitty and taste bad. Fucking feeding them corn pellets... So, when they have farmed salmon sometimes they dye the meat to look more natural. ew

if by lesser quality food you mean mcdonalds dollar menu and hot pockets type shit then yeah i agree with you. i don't buy into there being a big difference between organic and inorganic produce. for meats sure i believe you'll get a slightly healthier cut of meat if you get something that's not pumped full of hormones and fed processed grains and shit all day long but to me it's not worth paying 2-3 times the price. (from your previous post i think you're mostly in agreement with me)

Are you against farming animals? I do not agree with some "farming practices" but you are hinting at some radical stuff...

I am am not arguing on either side. Obviously most people want to think that the animals we eat enjoyed a nice life, and we are being decent and humane.

Without knowing exactly what a chicken needs to feel natutal (space, food, etc.), I feel pretty good about most chicken farms I have been to and enjoy consuming the product. The farms are not what draws the controversial attention, it's the last couple days with transportation/hold/slaughter.

yeah, the loopholes most companies use when dealing with "organic" and "natural" ingredients is shocking, and is probably going to get worse as this gluten-free popularity rises, I think.

My favorite is that in China and Russia, it is illegal to import American beef due to all the shit we throw into cattle feed.

China..... the place where it doesn't rain in cities, it ashes, says it's not healthy to eat our meat.

I'm not against the practices of farming animals. It just needs to be done right. I have seen how some chicken farms run and it's disgusting. I eat organic food and if not organic I just pay attention to the meats/vegetables/fruits I am buying. You don't have to spend a fortune to eat healthy you just have to know where to get your food. All the information you need is out there you just gotta find it.

Been working in a fish shop since July in Bozeman, really interesting market. The only thing we get that is not wild is our shellfish. Clams and mussels we get from an aquaculture farm on the east coast, but all of our fish, shrimp, etc... is wild. Was actually just reading an article in one of our restaurant supply magazines about how farm raised shrimp have been shown to be less nutritious. But we also have to keep in mind the huge demand for these products that spawned these farms in the first place. Without them we could put our wild fisheries in more danger by over fishing the wild populations such as what is occurring with halibut in AK right now.

You don't knowe but suffice it to say that a veggie based diet is not cheap or efficient for a high energy expending person like myself. I need(from trial and error) right around 1.2g of protein per lb of bodyweight or I start losing muscle.

Now, I am 200lbs on average. How much beans, quinoa, nuts etc would I need to eat to get up to 240 grams of protein? A fuck ton. How much would it cost? A fuck ton. Eating meat is a much more manageable proposition from a quantity and cost perspective.

For some folks a veggie based diet works fine. For many others it is simply inefficient and overly inconvenient.

That's understandable. I only weigh 170 and just recently got into heavily working out. I cheat with protein powder and definatley rely in beans and nuts a lot. Granted info eat fish. I gave up meat because I started feeling like shit after every time I ate it; same with most cereals and other junk food.

that is very interesting and a valid point, but it is much more prevalent with salmon here than halibut. my summer job for the past 8 years has been counting the spawning salmon here in the interior. Salmon return to their home rivers between 4 and 7 years old to spwan which means the repercussions of over fishing are not fully felt for at least that long. Since i have been working that job we have seen record high numbers of salmon being caught commercially and record low numbers of salmon actually making it to their spawning grounds. So few that they have been closing the subsistence fishing for people living here. One year so many were caught commercially that less than 1% of the expected numbers made it up the Yukon and into their Canadian spawning grounds.

I wouldn't necessary call protein powders cheating. I take some after the gym between work. I just don't have the time to eat a full meal. So a banana and powder will do. I already have a salad with beets and chicken prepared for lunch... the problem with most nuts are how fatty they are vs protein content. Also, you can run into problems with nuts because they really are supposed to be shelled or kept cooler if not. Lots of nuts have mold on em from sitting out. Plus, they add sooo much shitty salt if you buy the wrong kind. Last time I grabbed a handful of almonds/cashews from my mom's fridge I felt full and bloated for a few hours. So gassy. Made me feel shitty, and I am convinced it was from a mold. Or coincidence

as a native british columbian i agree that farmed salmon is terrible in every way, but eating wild salmon isn't going to help keep the population up, so the obvious solution here is to just stop eating salmon altogether.

yup.. they've done amazing work in NY with habitat restoration and removing old dams. That combined with conservation efforts and limits/seasons has really improved the trout/salmon population.

sackas a native british columbian i agree that farmed salmon is terrible in every way, but eating wild salmon isn't going to help keep the population up, so the obvious solution here is to just stop eating salmon altogether.


If we could restore habitats and spawning grounds to what they were 70 plus years ago and dealt with some of the other issues (unsustainable salmon farming) that are affecting salmon numbers, we would have so much damn wild salmon that we wouldn't know what to do with it.
