As someone who loves skiing, I love every aspect of skiing. That includes park, powder, moguls, aerials, ect. You have to respect every single person that attaches a pair of slippery sticks to a pair of ridiculous boots and starts going down hill on snow, no matter how they choose to do that. However, there's one particular group of skiers that isn't getting the respect they deserve, and that's female skiers. I see a video get posted, it gets a ton of views, it's really popular, it features an awesome chick skiing and I think "awesome, a chick is finally getting some respect." But then I read the comments, and it's filled with two things: hate and requests for sexual favors. So what does this girl do, eventually she stops posting her content, she shys away from the internet skiing community, and resorts to only posting her videos on Vimeo with the comments turned off. Now if this only happened once, sure, maybe she just can't handle the hate, I mean tons of people get hate on this site (although they shouldn't either, but that's another topic for another day). But this happens CONSTANTLY. Since becoming a mod I'm constantly getting requests to have comments deleted that are sexually abusive and demeaning to women, I'm noticing it more and more. And that absolutely FUCKED up part...these are hot chicks who FUCKING SKI!!! Some of them even better than you. These are girls you could potentially hang out with on the slopes and have a good time with. But instead, we hate on them and call them a slut and ask them to show their tits. Not only do you make her feel bad, but you make yourself look like an ass AND you ruin it for everyone else.

TL;DR: Stop ruining skiing for girls. Grow the fuck up. Start treating girls with the respect they deserve and be stoked that they enjoy the same sport as you.

Also FYI: Any negative shit without backing it up with reason and/or sexism/chauvinistic shit will be promptly deleted and met with a ban (and not just in this thread). Seriously, grow up.

BWalmerSo when a girl PMs me and says that she was offended by what has been said to her in the comments section of her own video (and not because of her skill even, not that it should matter), I'm supposed to say "Well that's NS for ya." FUCK THAT! Not one person on this site should feel offended by what has been said to them personally. Just because you live miles away and will probably never see this person in real life do NOT give you the right to hide behind your anonymity and call girls obscene names or request sexual favors, it's fucking gross and there's literally no need for it. Seriously, why even write the comment? Cause it's funny? That's called being a fucking bully, and just because it was said on the internet doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. You realize there ARE female skiers who have personally told me that they will not post videos or pictures on this website simply because they are afraid to be called a whore...seriously, that's awful. You're literally taking a part of skiing and ski culture away from them.

And I don't hate you, but I certainly don't want to meet you in person...but that's not new.


I think I strayed too far from my actual point, and if you reread my original comment, I completely agree with the need for change regarding sexist comments. But if a girl wants to put herself out there, go right ahead. I am in no way trying to "oppress" them and keep them away from this great sport, but if it sucks, it could be a misogynist thought, or it could be because the edit does in fact suck. Guys edits get hate too, does that mean they hate men? No I didn't write that comment while laughing to myself, no I'm not trying to be a bully. I'm trying to promote honesty. Just tell it like it is.

When you tell someone not to do something because it might provoke shitty people, you are saying that shitty people are here to stay and we need to adapt to them, when instead we can try and get rid of them.

Hopefully my point is clear, it's not always easy to express yourself on a forum.

No. It's a total problem in skiing.

I've worked in ski shops - chicks are either not hired because "lol she's a girl wtf would she know" or if they are, they are never respected to the same degree. This isn't the same for all shops (I for one have worked in one that was run by a chick, and therefore the place was super accepting and amazing and I miss it) but for the most part, as much as shops say they want to grow the sport and be accepting, they're still just appeasing the rich white guy with the nuclear family and stepford wife who they scoff at when she complains about a boot not fitting right.

I've worked as a ski instructor - in many situations, you are paid based on the lessons you take. If you don't get lessons and it's slow, you don't make money. So many times I'd be actually wanting to take a break, and my boss would give a lesson to me rather than a chick who was more eager to teach, and I never fucking understood why (I confronted him about this situation, actually)

I've worked in the ski industry. I've been to SIA. I've heard the way guys in the industry talk about 'pro hoes' and all this garbage. About how women shouldn't be sponsored and how womens skiing will never be as good as the men... and yet they're trying to sell womens skis and snowboards? Fucking idiots, I tell you. They blame poor sales on disinterest when they can't even hire a chick as a sales representative - oh, unless she's selling apparel. Then that makes sense all of a sudden.

it's not even just a problem in skiing. It's a problem in our society. Women are mocked for being sports fans. Men are mocked for wanting to be a hair dresser. Women are mocked for going into physics or tech fields rather than literature or art history. Men are scoffed at at when they show up for a womens studies class and he turns out not to be gay (happened to me). These 'norms' as we call them make up the way we treat people, and hold prejudice against who they should be and what they should do.

You wouldn't say that women who crush a bump run are lame right? What about a ski racer hauling 80mph down a rock hard ice field...? oh, but if she's in your terrain park, and she's not throwing a cork 10? "Laaaame, get off my lawn!"

Let's treat women in our community right. Let's treat them like they belong. They do. Whether you like watching their edits or not... And if you respect them, and treat them right, they might fucking surprise you and one day, we'll have a whole olympic field of Sarah Burkes killing it.

I honestly think the female side of freeskiing is one of the raddest things going on in skiing right now. Watching somebody push the envelope to their farthest personal limits while doing tricks I can actually relate to is awesome. I love watching Henrik toss buttered triples or Clayton spin onto 5 kink closeouts. It's mind boggling. But my stoke factor is so much higher for ams and female rider who are pushing the limits. In the most positive way, it's like cheering for the underdog.

Female skiing is crazier than it's ever been, and the fact that there are TWO female ski movies this season is insane. Keep murdering it ladies.


IMO, sexist bullshit should be an immediate bannable offense. It's insider sabotage of freeskiing.

I totally agree, don't get me wrong, but I think it's more. I don't necessarily just see girls being treated badly, but kids who are younger, kids who maybe aren't as good of skiers as the rest of us (I honestly suck), and just everyone else. I have 3 pet peeves when it comes to this. Obviously, the thing about girls. Not only are some comments offending but they are really fucking annoying. It is really shocking the maturity level of probably half the members. The next, when someone is uneducated about something pertaining to skiing, they make a thread about what they have to say, and then get hate because they are stupid or they didn't use the searchbar or whatever. Do people actually think that they are accomplishing things by doing that? I really don't understand. You may think that it's nothing but when you're on the other end of it I bet it's a lot worse. Now, video's. There are kids who are just getting into skiing or ones that have been skiing for awhile. Some of us are really ballsy, and kids don't really have anything to lose. Also some of the kids on the hill today are naturals and athletes. What I hate...never ever ever ever hate on someones video of a new trick they learned or an edit they put together showcasing their skiing ability, whether it be a boy, girl, alien, smurf I don't care. This should be a gimme. Do kids on this site not remember being there at one point? The best skiers in the world at one point were the same way, so why be mean to kids who maybe don't make it to the hill as often as some kids do and others who focus primarily on skiing. It totally takes the stoke and the fun out of skiing and learning new tricks. There's a mental reward for doing something cool that you've never done before. It gets you sooo happy and so excited and pumped for more. What if that was gone? I hate it when kids comment "wow _________ sucks". I fucking hate it. Ok I'm done.

I am so happy Newschoolers can address this. I personally have never gotten what I would consider hate, but I have gotten several negative comments on edits I've posted, or with me in them before, and those stick way far out from the positive feedback, I can't imagine what it's like getting consistent hate on here. I know I would definitely stop posting my content. This thread hopefully sticks out to those kids who can't do anything better than hate. This has been a pleasure to read through

I just wish kids would be more real and genuine, like 75% of the comments on ns someone would NEVER say that to someone in real life. People love to hid behind the internet and hatehatehate everything and be racist/sexist/etc it's ridiculous. If this problem is starting to drive away women skiers from the most popular ski website, things need to fucking change.

Lets not treat girls as girls or guys as guys. Lets treat all genders the same, as skiers. If girls are to progress in this sport, then we need to treat them not as girls, but as equals. Gender should not have anything to do with it. You are just as sexist for seeing misogyny in those comments as you believe the commentors are.

Lets be real, flashing your genitals/private parts in any video by any gender is degrading and only done for attention getting. I know this because hoodcrew gets the same "no dignity" and "Parents think" comments on their party videos. Honestly, if i flashed my dick in an edit, people would ask what my parents thought. People would also be angry at me for flashing my private parts on video towards a site directed at a primarily youth audience. And the switch skiing/spin right is one of the most stock ns comments around, and youll find it on any ns video. You are only seeing sexism in those comments you posted because you perceive it to be there.

Continuing to separate the treatment between girls and guys on ns will only perpetuate the problem and widen the gender gap. Do not treat girls with respect. Treat people/equals/peers/skiers with respect, and those who earn your respect at that. Were all skiers, and its just skiing.

Not even regarding videos but this site in general. The kids that are posting "show me your tits" everywhere are fucking annoying as hell. Whether you're just an awkward person trying to fit in or you're just dumb, find something else.

I feel for the girls honestly. People wonder why more girls don't post on here. "Omg I wish their were more pink names on here" Pink name posts a thread "show me your tits omg show me your tits".

Right, but as a modern society we push down that part of our anamalistic tendancies and treat women with respect.

The only place where you might get away with saying that its alright for men to act like that is if you went to join ISIS. They probably have some laws of keeping women as property there, and it being their fault that you can't control yourself.

One thing I'll never get is why people are so quick to dismiss the capabilities of the ski community.

I mean look at this thread.... we're out there. We want this thing to go in the right direction - we crave it. Yet, we all spend most of our time blaming these random faceless shitheads for ruining the day... and talking like they own this fucking place.

Well they don't. We do. You do.

Part of making NS a much more community-centric platform was to enable those who wish to see change to have a pedestal to make their voice heard. Sure, sometimes that voice ends up being from a bad person, but why don't the good people out there rise up more and speak out?

So many times the conversation is dominated by only a couple of extremely negative people... yet when something like this pops up it seems like there's support pouring in from every direction.

Why don't people speak up more?

I can't tell you how many times I've been at the top of an inrun of a feature and a girl skis by and then someone calls her a gaper, says she sucks, or says "I'm gonna try to see if I can get a blowy from her on the lift".

I think that one aspect of the hate of the guys towards girls is that there's a lot of guys out there working really hard on their skiing and don't have a lot of recognition, and won't really get anything from skiing. As for a girl, from a guy's perspective, it seems a lot easier to get recognition. So there's probably a lot of guys that tell themselves unconsciously "it would be so much easier if I was a girl". But at the same time, no guy would trade his abilities just for being a top women skier.

It's cool if girls ski, it's inspiring for girls and everything. But as a guy, I don't watch women skiing. I don't like it, it's not impressive to me. And it's the same with women sports in general. If you're a guy, watching women sports is not the most exciting thing.

What BWalmser said makes sense. Girls are pretty much victim of cyberintimidation, and it's not cool if they stop skiing. But seriously, there's a few girls out there that you can see are putting the effort and want to progress their skiing, and have a pretty good level. But come on, some girls at the olympics didn't even look like olympic athletes.

Oh and one last thing. We should treat girls skiing park just like anyone else, not like if they're special. No one's really chearing when a guy clears a rail. If it was the same for girls, I'm sure they'd just want to push themselves harder instead of being like "Oh it looks like I'm good I can do front 2s". It seems a bit harsh, but to me, it makes sense.

So I don't have the attention span to read all the comments. However, I don't see how their could be any argument to keeping the trend going. When I see a chicks edit I get fuckin stoked! Especially if they're better than me. We need more girls out there throwin the fuck down and hate won't ever get that done. THen again, I never send hate. If someone is better than me and is throwin it down, I give them props.(I give alot of props haha) If I see someone strugglin with something, just throw em a "keep at it" or something. We're all here for the same thing . . . to shit on snowboarders! Just playing they're cool too haha. were all here doing what we love to do.

While i agree, and treating the entire community with respect is equally as important (See previous comment of mine somewhere in this thread). this is WAY less of an issue with men than it is with women. the ratio of blue to pink is ~ 10000000:1 (exaggerating, but you get it), and the ratio of hate on men vs hate on women is at least 10:1..

i'm going to have to agree here. and maybe we can stir up the whole they're just boobs debate, and how we need to stop being offended by our own anatomy. but as far as i'm concerned, a woman's sexuality is her business, but if you need to use your sexuality for attention, i'm not going to like you. and i think it reaffirms the problem women face in skiing, and on NS, and on the street. my problem isn't nudity, it's just how we use female nudity. i'd rather someone watch my edit because it's skiing.

It's posted on signs before you enter the park at my home resort, and we really need to bring that attitude to our online community. Don't glorify girls, but down put them down for their gender. Same fo boys, If they out there trying, encouge them and give them pointers instead of hate.

totally agree with BWalmer, but as others have said some women shouldnt ask for the attention,as far as gender equality in skiing, that will never happen otherwise there would probably be either no female pro skiers or a ton of male and female pros if you know what i mean.

and as the ladies have said. They aren't asking for attention or exclusivity. They're asking for respect. Not to have bullshit comments on their content, to have their content taken seriously, and to not be harassed with 'tits or gtfo' kinda immature garbage.

the real problem with skiing is the scene it has. No wonder I've pretty much gotten completely into MTB, no stupid scene of people judging everyone.

Goepper is a poster boy for freeskiing. He doesn't need to be defended. He could outski anyone on this site, people hate him because they are jealous, not because of his gender.

neutralzombiei'm going to have to agree here. and maybe we can stir up the whole they're just boobs debate, and how we need to stop being offended by our own anatomy. but as far as i'm concerned, a woman's sexuality is her business, but if you need to use your sexuality for attention, i'm not going to like you. and i think it reaffirms the problem women face in skiing, and on NS, and on the street. my problem isn't nudity, it's just how we use female nudity. i'd rather someone watch my edit because it's skiing.

I'm just saying almost every pro skier will have some people that hate on them on the come up, that is just the ski industry and the people who push through it will make it.. if your going to just give up because some people are hating on whatever it is you are trying to do, then you probably weren't invested in it enough to have kept going anyway
