Kind of like the falling thread, but what kind of crazy injuries have you witnessed while skiing. A couple of years ago I was behind these 3 kids on a quad in Telluride and they were messing around playing without the bar down, and sure enough the kid sitting on the outside reached too far and fell off (the drop had to be at least 35 ft high: Chair 4 in telluride above the park) onto hard packed snow. Everyone was yelling and the kid was limp on the ground and patrol got him on a sled and out of there. We found out the next day from a patroller we rode the lift with that the kid was ok and was lucky enough to only break his ankles I believe, but could've been a lot worse off if he fell off axis. Have you guys seen crazier injuries?
Saw a snowboarder overshoot a jump while going crazy fast. It was only a small jump, but the kid was easily 15 feet in the air flying 20 feet past the landing. He landed on his side, and slid into the woods. I went to check on him and was in shock screaming "take off my jacket please". We calmed him down and patrol came down. They cut his jacke and showed what looked like something straight outta 4chan. His shoulder was horribly dislocated, and he had a compound fracture in his forearm . It also was accompanie by copious amounts of blood.
Some guy double backie'd right on his head on a pretty large jump, he was on the ground, shaking but was clearly unconscious. Luckily he was okay after an hour or so, but shit was scary as fuck.
Was pre season ish and I was with a group of kids waiting off to the side on a reasonably sized jump, and this girl who mainly skied big mtn. was gonna try and hit it. She came in to fast leaning back seat, and did about 45% of a backflip to the back of her neck. Super scary
Not skiing, but semi related. Was with some friends at an open gym session at a gymnastics facility to use the tramps and foam pit. This one kid was boosting pretty high and doing triple fronts into the foam pit. On his last hit, right before he was gonna send it, he hits the tramp and there's this "popping" noise, and he rolls into the foam pit. Laughing, we go to see what happened, thinking he just wussed out. Then we noticed that there were holes in the mesh trampoline and that both his legs were broken below the knee. He lifted one up, saw that it was hanging on with just skin, and started buggin. Most fucked up shit I've ever seen.
so someone put a little jump next to a lift tower and every one was trying to tap it /wall rid and this guy not so good at park came to hit it caught his tip and broke his ribs

Not skiing, but this summer I was wake boarding. Witnessed my own knee dislocating and my MCL, ACL, and meniscus all tearing. Then had the good fortune to watch my knee relocate itself back into the joint with a jarring pop sound. Still gives me shivers thinking about it.
off season biking at the wild flower rush a few years back and it was my brothers last run and we came into the bottom section where someone thought it would be smart to put a loose large rock in the line so my brother hit the rock breaking his arm to the point it just hangs then dislocates the other and chips part of getting the loose chipped piece in the little gap making hardly any movement causing excruciating pain making him scream bloody murder for what seemed like an eternity
Also heard of a kid (in Telluride) that got ripped in half by his legs a few years back in an avalanche. If you look up surviving telluride they talk about it with Seth Morrison and Jacob Wester

A buddy of mine tried a double backflip while freerunning, but landed straight on his neck. He later found out he broke his neck. He is okay now though
couple years ago i saw a grown-up man speed down the hill and there was a knuckle in trail and behind it was a small kid. the man crashed straight to the kid and his edge cut the kids face open. i swear it was a good 15cm cut on the kids cheek. i felt like puking when i saw it. so much blood
First time my friend tried a frontflip, he landed directly on his head and was unconscious for like 20 minutes, he got a pretty bad concussion and fucked up his face pretty bad.
last year in the pre-season of winter i saw a guy catch an edge on a snowboard and fall backwards hitting his head on some hard pack snow, wearing a helmet. and he had a seizure, we had to do all the things like lay him on his side and everything till someone got ski patrol.
last year at my school ski and snowboard club a kid challenged me to a race down the steepest run at our hill. he insisted that snowboards are faster but either way, whats the harm in just bombing a run with this guy? we set up and go,im ahead of him right away, and halfway down the run behind me i hear him fall and i hear screaming. somehow, the kid wiped out going in a straight fucking line, and broke 3 ribs.
One time when I was riding up the chair lift at sugarbush and this one kid threw a huge flatspin and didn't quite make it to the landing, there was a little girl standing right were he landed and he took her out. I honestly thought that i witnessed someone die.
Landed really backseat two years ago, landed a heard a pop... Thought that my ACL was popped. Turned out that my kneecap ligament had torn a 2" piece of my shinbone! Worst shit ever even though I have broken ribs and both my arms in crashes before.. Back skiing now, but not like before..
Kinda sad but first time on skis dad and I are waiting at the bottom and watched a snowboarder out of control run into a tree and break her neck. They had to shut the whole mountain down and bring in a life flight. We later found out she died on the way to the hospital.
Im on the chair over the park at crotched in New Hampshire one night last year and see some guy who looked like he had rental skis and was probably new to skiing. The guy drops in and as he did that i said to my friend, lets hope this goes well. The jump was like a 10 footer, pretty small but the kicker was steep and the guy didn't compensate for the angle. He did about a quarter of a backflip and landed on has back and thank god not his neck since he overshot about 15 feet. Everyone on the lift gasped and then laughed but once he stopped sliding it was dead silent. The guy didn't move, some people called ski patrol and they were down there over him for a while. Thats one of most scary things ive witnessed while on skis, I dont know what happened to him or what the outcome was but I REALLY HOPE HE WAS OK.
I was at my school's ski and snowboard with a few friends and we were at the bottom of the hill when some fucking stupid snowboarder comes flying down the mountain and slams into my friend they both slid like 15 or 20 feet. The snowboarder was ok but my friend had a bad concussion and broke his arm and leg.
There was a big spindle (the kind that holds thick underground tubing) set in a table top jump and this guy tried doing a hand drag 180 over it. He got super sideways, but didn't come back on axis, overshot the landing, and landed hard on his shoulder. I think I heard his collarbone snapping.
While skiing at Sugarbush last spring my friend went for a cork 7, knuckled hard and bounced off his side pretty bad. We didn't think anything of it and went in for lunch. After a few minutes he said his side was burning, so we took him to the med office. Turns out he lacerated his spleen and he ended up getting surgery.
Watched my housemate break her back and neck. She did the classic overshoot backy at the top of Black Park last season and went down hard.
Another that sticks out was a good buddy of mine (a snowboarder), coincidentally did the same thing on a large spine in the park in Val Thorens, France... chucked a backy way too big and landed on his back on the flat. The funny thing was the impact was so brutal he literally shit himself. He was pulling nuggets out of his pants in front of the whole ESF! ha
A kid at my home mountain in Pa overshoot a pretty small jump to flat onto his toe edge apparently, we rolled over the knuckle because his friend started freaking out on the knuckle, The kid was seizing laying on his back, I was riding with these two girls, one of them and I were so fucking blown away of what to do for this random kid. The other girl who apparently had been ski patrol before, the kid was now choking on his tongue and trying to swallow it, this girl that I didn't know put her hand in his mouth pulled his tongue from the back of his throat bringing the kid into sometime of conscious state that wasn't seizing. From what Ive heard it's really dangerous to put your hand in the mouth of someone seizing because they might bite your fingers off or something crazy. Yeah but the gnarliest moment Ive seen, plus it was before a rail jam so the vibes were way off.
