Barefootin_Fiendit's pretty easy to analyze the video and say all of this from the comfort and safety of your home. you're a great armchair quarterback. if you can't understand why someone who is placed in dangerous situations on a daily basis might react like he did under the circumstances, then I don't know what to tell you.
once again, i'm not saying that the cop was right, just that I can understand how it could happen. he's only human for christ's sake. I have not once stated that I don't think he should go to jail or face any disciplinary action, i've only stated that I don't think he should get 20 years for what appears to be an "honest mistake"
Aomameit's cause he was black. also you're not supposed to get out of your car when you're pulled over, and you should tell a cop what you're going to do before you do it. not that i side with him here, he even shot after the guy jumped away and had his hands up.
RubberSoulget a grip, the perp could just as easily be dead right now. put the (max) sentence into perspective for you?
speedinIn explaining Groubert's firing Friday, Smith said the department's policy on using force says that officers can use "only the level of force necessary to accomplish lawful objectives."
"That protocol was not followed in this case. Further, this incident occurred in broad daylight. Mr. Groubert had a clear and unobstructed view of Mr. Jones," Smith said.
The shooting, Smith said, "deviates from SCDPS standards and cannot be tolerated."

RubberSoulhe's not going to sit in jail for 20 years dude...
and fuck off with this "it's pretty easy to say that from your computer screen" nonsense. the video evidence will show in court that he fucking blew it, no ifs ands or buts. i can't wait to see you call the court armchair quarterbacks when they watch the video and see what is plain as day.
he's a cop, he wields too much power for this "oh well man you have a stressful job, we'll charge you less severely than a civilian if you shoot someone" bs. get a grip, the perp could just as easily be dead right now. put the (max) sentence into perspective for you?
yes it was an honest mistake probably but 1) that's why he's being charged with the crime that concerns itself with harm done without malicious intent evidenced and 2) that doesnt change the fact that he fucked up and seriously endangered the guy

brobamaOP hopped on the bandwagon of condemning all cops because of a couple of cops' actions lol
saskskierYou can't charge someone with attempted murder unless you can prove there was an intent to kill.
CONAIR_BUSCEMINot only did he shoot off multiple shots when the guys hands were up but he was near gas pumps.

omnidataIn contrary to popular believe gasoline doesn't not magically ignite when faced with an oncoming hot speeding bullet, that is Michael Bay's reality, one that only exists on 70 foot IMAX screens.
Granite_StateExcept a bullet can hit another piece of metal and cause a spark which can ignite gasoline. Not saying its probably, but it can happen.
Barefootin_Fiendoh, so now we're playing the "could have" game? so the perp just as easily "could have" been reaching for a gun to shoot the cop. the perp "could have" been reaching for a gecko to announce that he just saved 15% on his car insurance by switching to Geico. well, maybe not that one because we all know black people don't have insurance. (joke, relax.)
blah, blah, blah. whatever. you're free to think what you want because ultimately it means jack fuck all either way.
OREOPRAHDo cops have to pass an iq test to get the job?
Barefootin_FiendShould the cop be fired? Absolutely. Do I feel he should be facing 20 years in prison for this mistake? No, I don't really think I do.
RubberSouleven if he got the max sentence. not that i think he should. that's a super long time.
cornholioPlaying devils advocate a little here but -
Why didn't the guy have his wallet on him? He pulled up to a convenience store, got out of his car and started to close the door. At that point where is he going without a wallet? Is it that unreasonable to think maybe he was diving back into the car for a weapon?
Barefootin_FiendI didn't see this post of yours earlier. So what exactly are you trying to convince me of?
RubberSouli took "facing 20 years in prison" as "being charged as he is" because that's what the structure of the charge is. i just couldn't picture you saying that in another situation.
doesn't matter. have a great weekend everyone!
Barefootin_Fiendi mean, i'm no lawyer or anything, so i can't say much about the charges themselves. i honestly don't even know what exactly he's being charged with. i just think 20 years is a really long fucking time for an honest mistake. too long, imho.
from what i understand, some states have varying degrees of assault with varying degrees of punishment, but i don't know much more about them than that. if that's the case here, then maybe a lesser degree of assault would be more appropriate, but what do i know. i'll leave that shit to the lawyers.
realistically, i'd like to think that either way he won't do 20 years, so kind of a moot point.

cornholioif you went to a gas station or convenience store would you pick it up before you got out of the car to go inside and buy something?
omnidataTry to light petrol with a spark. It's damn near impossible. Same as with cigarettes.
