3_6mafiaThanks guys, one more question. If salt melts snow then why use it in temps ABOVE freezing. does the salt make it refreeze?

BWalmerIt's science, but basically the snow melts and refreezes so it's hard and stays more solid longer. As far as types, we use Calcium Chloride, but really any type of salt will do. When the snow is sugary and won't stay together use a propane torch to melt then it'll refreeze (like with the salt), but you have to kind of do that in layers because sugar is a bitch to build with by hand.
Saga.Without getting all sciencey on you or drawing pictures this is how it works. Salt reduces the freezing temperatute of the snow (thats why it melts ice on roads and sidewalks). When you put it on a jump lip, in run, whatever the snow is several inches/feet deep. The salt melts the top layer which turns into water and when the salt is dissolved this water meets with the colder snow under underneath and freezes solid.
And if you really want to get into it theres a bunch of real science research you can do.
