Last week, the Super Proof crew rolled into Montreal to premiere their inaugural film, The Recruitment. They ended up dropping jaws during the private Red Bull screening, took home the coveted "Best Editing" award (along with MANY other nominations), and then wow'ed the crowd during the public screening on Friday.

Now's your chance to ask them anything you'd like. Make sure you get your questions in ASAP though, as the crew will around TONIGHT at 9pm EDT to answer them!

BWalmer1) Leigh's editing was amazing, and I thought I heard that this was his first time really editing a whole movie. How did you guys decide to use Leigh to edit instead of someone else? And, what was the learning curve like to really get that final product where you wanted it.

2) How long did C-Van's both was redirect flips or whatever that was take to get? Cause that was probably the sickest pair of shots I saw all weekend. The tricks, the angles, the editing, everything was awesome about them.


Thank you for the kind words. Well when i first promised Sean i could deliver a film i certainly didn't no how much work it actually was, i had made edits in the past, but making this film was a brand new process for me. creating flow an consistency was actually very hard and developing a story the audience could follow was tricky also. i learned a lot along the way and feel very confident now and I'm excited to push this style of ski film making further. Thats the beauty of fiction, we can push it or take it as far as we want!

Turner.Was there anything in particular going on in the ski industry that drove/encouraged you guys to set off on a project like this? Is it a response to the trends and styles that you see in other projects/companies?


great question. it wasnt one thing in particular, it was more a mix of everything that was going on in ski film side, and the industry side that we felt our crew could overcome and get past the things that we didnt like in order to see more of what we wanted to see. we arent ones to just follow what other companies/people have already done or are doing. if we did just follow the trend, well we probably wouldnt even be talking about it because we wouldnt have made a movie unless we were going to make it how we wanted it to be perceived.

I think to get the two shots it was actually two separate days. Most likely due to our shitty winch having issues.

When it was being premeried at IF3 did you guys like the reaction from the crowd? Was it what you were expecting or were you expecting something different?

That took corey a whole evening of hard work, and the right side rodeo we ended up using was landed about an 2 hours before he ended the session!! if you work hard you come out with awesome stuff!

In addition to that, how did you feel about the screening at the red bull party? It would have bothered me that people were talking and depth of the sound design couldn't be heard. There were details that I didn't notice until seeing in the theater.

Any funny stories from iF3 you'd like to share?


actually the skiing was the easy part of filming this movie, even though it was a challenging season. we have all shot and skied in front of and behind the camera. but for a lot of us, we hadnt done much acting, or filming the acting. made it quite the leaning process and many outtakes as you will see in the credits of the film.

thanks BWalmer, i think we spent the most time at that spot then any other spot, the flat spins in the corner took 3 separate sessions, i got the leftside flatspin the first night but it was really dark and not as good as i wanted so i went back and got it cleaner, then went back a third time and got the right side. We also did other stuff at that spot, i think in total we were there for a week straight doing different stuff like team shots, lifestyles and trying to be creative with the area because it was one of the last remaining spots in whistler that still had snow.

Also if you guys have any questions for me ill be checking this throughout the day!

Who drove/owns that toyota pickup, and is it for sale? How has being in whistler shaped the dynamics of superproof, and do you intend to expand filming to other parts of the world?

You guys killed it, I was unsure where the movie was going at times but it was really brought together at the end. The skiing was sweet, editing was unreal and it was really refreshing overall. One of the best films at IF3 for sure.

Everyone that was a part of the kids and that is a part of Superproof are really good friends around the Whistler area. Everyone skis together all the time so you never know.

Josh stack owns the Toyota. C Van was driving it, haha and learning standard at the same time.

We are really lucky to be based out of Whistler. It is a great area for what we are doing and couldn't imagine being based out of anywhere else. We will do trips throughout the year, depends where the snow is.

Do you guys realize that you have created an entirely new way of making films. Not just ski films, but this movie is going to make its way across all of the action sports. Once film makers in the skating world watch this I guarantee that they will make a similar film or one with the same aesthetics. I can see some grungy ass skate crew making a film like this maybe on a lower budget still.

So what I am getting at is, How does it feel to be at the head a new genre of film making.

Im more of a Momentum ski camps guy as ive spent every summer there since the age of 14 as a camper and a coach. As for the second question, The most fun part of filming this for me was probably our Kamloops trip we had about 5 guys packed into a motel room just going for it staying out till 6 am hitting features, to me that was pretty fun and we got a lot of good shots there.

Thats what i was hoping for, I always believed there was allot more to be done with the ski film industry. I believe others think this way to, we just decided to get out there and do it! we are going to keep pushing what is possible with are next project and hope to inspire a similar confidence in others to get out there and try something new!

hmmm i would say that this is a different way to make action sports film, however i found it reminiscent of 4bi9s film from last year. it's quite similar to a lot of UK action/suspense cinema.

if i would ask anything, it would probably be along the lines of why do you support the glorification of violence and gangsterism in ski films, and why does that feel necessary or integral for your creative process? while i found the aesthetics of the film superb, i am disappointed by the aggressiveness of the plot. i'm a huge fan of general violence and gore in cinema, but in no way a real fan of violent, gangster ski movies. artsy is one thing, but you lost me here.

To me I used the presents of violence in the film to represent struggle. Growing up in England I struggled with that myself and am not an advocate of it. Going out and getting the ski action footage we get isn't easy, so I wanted to dramatize and present that struggle in the form of violence. don't confuse film with real life. It shows how bad things can go if you loose your way in life, but can always turn around for the better as long as your open to change.
