Filming with an iPhone...

So I just bought an iPhone 6 and holy shit dat camera doe. 240fps?!

I'm thinking of ditching the dslr this year and just filming with my phone..

Obviously stabilization is a big prob, anyone know of a stedicam light enough for a phone lol?

Audio would also be an issue.. I wonder if they make iPhone mike attachments


Yeah it's going to look gaper as fuck but I'm actually kinda stoked to try it out.

Ns what's you're thoughts on this?

The problems I see with using an iphone for a main camera are:
Media management - unless you have one of the larger size phones or transfer the files off the phone while you're shoot ing you might not have enough space to film for a long shoot.

Protecting the phone from the snow and getting knocked around.

getting a phone call in the middle of a perfect shot.

battery life, if you are doing a lot of long shots the battery might not hold up all day.

It could work great for grabbing quick shots here and there when you dont have another camera, but I would still have something to use for a main camera.

Life Proof cases actually work really well provided you dont run it over

getting a phone call in the middle of a perfect shot.
Put it in airplane mode while shooting.

Bring the charger with you and charge it at lunch

Your stuck with the setting apple gives you. You cant change exposure, aperture and all that fancy shiz. No changing lenses no (high quality) fish eyes. The list goes on.

I don't really get the big deal with it, if it records just as well or even better than a camera he has why wouldn't he use it? Of course there are a lot of things that will get in the way for a bigger project. I have recorded short edits with my iPhone and I think they look great.

I mean if you aren't looking to make a seriously produced edit, then why not? But if you're going to invest in anything else for it then you're wasting your money.

If I had a phone capable of 240fps I'd at least use it for some Instagram edits or maybe a shot or two in a real edit but by no means would I ditch my dslr for it.

Too the above.. I have the 64gb iPhone so if I keep up with my media management I should have a good amount of space


I plan on getting the life proof water proof case when it comes out

I won't be shooting in low light obviously

Now with ios 8 you're able to change your camera settings instead of it just being auto


The problem I still see coming up is audio, but I've seen some mic attachments that might work, and battery

I didn't mean I would completely ditch the dslr I'll obviously use it for more technical shots but the convenience of using my phone just sounds so nice

even with 64gb, you're not going to be able to have very long edits. You'll fill that quick as hell if you're shooting at 240fps - unless the codec is super compressed and shitty, which is probably is.

changing camera settings still won't allow you to set the focus or give you a wider lens - of which the iphone lens is not particularly wide - so unstabilized, it's going to be even shakier

You'll have better luck using a GoPro for sure...

I mean... if THC does it and gets a good reception, you should do you as well. The best camera there is is the one you've got with you after all

Bullshit, the best camera is the RED camera, duh, you gotta have like 50 grand to be a real filmmaker and if you don't then you suck and need to give up.

...but honestly, I don't know how I'd feel about using the iphone as a legitimate tool for filming serious things.

If you are actually serious... Check out the iglide by glidecam for stablizing your phone and I'd try out some lense attachments. On the contrary I'd strongly consider using your dslr over the iPhone.

no offense bro, but if you wanted a convenient camera that shot nice quality in normal light, you could have stuck with your old phone and bought the latest gopro which is pretty fucking badass specs wise. Plus you'd still have a phone to listen to music instead of draining the battery, and you can buy another go pro to tape to your ass just cos it still cost less than a iphone 6...

if you really are getting into this tho, i have a steadicam that works for lighter cameras, iphone work too, pm me if you want to know, cos its at the bottom of a filled ski gear bag right now and can't remember what it's called

Because is a fucking phone dude. You own a video camera and want to use a phone instead?

The sensor is tiny, no ability to change lenses minus adding shitty fisheyes.

Don't just use and iphone6 because it shoots 240. Im sure its a 240 burst as well and I bet it doesn't even look that great at full res.

I should have said "use the dslr less" not "ditch the dslr" I'll still be using it for sure. I just was stoked after seeing how well it was doing video (Fps) and thought I need to take it up to the hill.

Are you judging off of the one clip in the keynote or is the other sample footage? Seems silly to get riled up about your phone doing 240fps at 720p

Because inexperienced videographers (most of NS) define "quality" in terms of content and image clarity, neither of which are as important as your art.

I say go for it. It could be a healthy or interesting experiment. Some of my fondest video memories arose from me grabbing a cheap, unassuming camera and getting weird with it, despite all the slo-mo FS700 circlejerking gearwhores on the internet who will tell you otherwise. If anything, using a shitty video camera like an iPhone 6 (outside of the cell phone realm, it is by all means not a good video camera) will strip away distractions and force you to rely on your actual skills rather than meaningless technological acrobatics.

TBH this is actually a good idea... They make the Glidecam IGlide and they have an attachment for the iphone... the only problem i see is maybe battery life on the iphone, but you could just buy alot of battery cases!!!

Haha it got me riled up because I only shoot with a t3i and 240fps is def way past what I'm used to. I have been messing around with it a lot and am still impressed!

haha vertical, what a joke

Look up death lens. or ollo clip. the death lens is a super sick fish eye, and ollo clip provides macro, wide angle, and fisheye. ALSO you can buy a DSLR attachment for your phone to put canon lenses on your phone.

ANOTHER THING is that most likely you wouldn't be filming an all slow mo edit. therefore you can still film at 1080p 60fps and get super clear shots.

ON THE DOWNSIDE you may look like a complete goon but if you make a sick edit they cant say shit.

I just got the 6 and i'm planning on filming with it a bit even though I have a Canon T3I and a Gopro 3

I agree with everything you said but I think part of the reaction to this thread comes from the fact that OP seems to be focusing on "dat 240fps slomo." Of course the best camera is always the one you have with you, the problem comes when you get all hot and bothered about a spec that really doesn't matter and is the kind of thing the gearwhores you mentioned (albeit on a much larger scale) are obsessed with. Thus OP comes across on focusing on those "meaningless technological acrobatics" (great phrase) rather than wanting to make something good.

So yeah, cool OP, make edits with your iPhone, film all you can, just don't assume that the phone is a better tool than your DSLR just because of one spec.

So yeah, if you want good image quality, skip the phone. If you want an artistic experiment, go for it!

This is a perfect thread for JLev to come in and tell everyone shitting on OP to stop taking themselves so seriously. It's just skiing - and guess what? It's just ski filming too! Peeps should just be stoked that OP wants to experiment with something a little bit different. Gear whores just get off on the fact that know a lot of filming jargon that most people don't. It's super annoying.

I feel like the fps honestly isn't that important since i don't you ever really need to show anything down that much. Your overall quality will be much better with the DSLR than with a phone.

Turns out the quality was just horrible on NS, it's fine on vimeo.

Still, people do a lot worse with proper cameras than you might with an iphone.

The IK Multimedia iRig Mic Cast is pretty good if your taking this seriously. i had it all the way through the summer and you can make some crappy videos sound a lot nicer. And its only $40
