is the iTunes version that you can download on the internet the same one that comes with an iPod?

iTunes doesn't always do update checks. There's been an update to iTunes 4.7.1 which fills a buffer overflow security issue.

Go to Apple's iTunes download site for an update.

its the same software but make sure you update it once you get your Pod hooked up
