Ski measurement convention?

I understand that there are a few ways to measure the size of a ski, tip to tail, effective edge and base length being the most popular. Although when Ive bought skis online in the past (since I live in the UK), I have been unable to establish how different companies measure the size of their skis. A couple years ago my friend and I bought a pair of Line TC's and Chronics for ourselves, both advertised as 171cm yet when we put them next to each other we noticed a significant size difference and decided to measure them from tip to tail. The Chronics were -2cm and the TC's +2cm of the advertised ski length.
I'm curious to find out whether anyone has any knowledge on how and why ski companies measure their skis differently. Ski companies already give us information on the width of the ski at various lengths of the ski, maybe they should also advertise effective edge, base length and tip & tail length, any thoughts Nsers?

Honestly that would confuse the vast majority of skiers. One thing I woul say though is knowing the actuall length in all honesty is not that useful. How the ski will perform is determine by so many other things that funding the most suitable ski does not just come down to what is the right size for you. Most people will ski differnt style skis in differn sizes too. I think the issue your having I more buying blind. If your in the uk you have a load of good shops and also plenty of chance to demo. Go to the shops look at the actual skis and most importantly test before you buy.

Thanks for the response. Yeah I just read somewhere else that the advertised ski length is more to do with the way it skis than the actual length but I still think there should be more clarity when they present the information of the ski.
Ive spent a decent amount of time looking at skis in Ellis Brigham, which is a good shop, but have never had the opportunity to demo skis since they shut at 7pm and I only go ski late evenings. But I will definitely try to demo more skis in the future, its just at this present time that's not possible for me.
