1. What details of mise-en-scene seem to contribute to the overall mood or tone of this film? How would you describe the mood of Double Indemnity?
2. How might one best describe the motivation of Phyllis in the film? Is she primarily interested in money? Is she in any way a sympathetic character?
3. In terms of narrative, how would you describe the fabula (the chronological and complete account of all events of the narrative) of Double Indemnity in relation to its syuzhet (the selection and ordering of narrative events presented in the film)? Do they follow the same order? What are the differences?
4. Define, as carefully as you can, the key elements of the main actors in this film (Stanwyck, MacMurray, Robinson). What choices to they make in their performances? How do their placement within scenes, their costume, etc. add to the development of their characters?
5. Using Double Indemnity as an example, identify three characteristics of film noir.
