Of the 100,000+ NS members 20% pay $5/yr for NS subscription = ad free videos + other stuff = $200,000 for NS to pull back ads from those members.

Everyone in the world stops buying toyota so they go out of business asap

ChubbyBoyLay of the bottle JLev. I don't mind seeing an add on NS. I know the company's money is going to a good source and NS can be made better.
JLevI'd rather see this community support itself & not have to rely on unrelated adverstising. We create the content, why not create the financing? Public radio has done it for decades for this same reason.
ChubbyBoyGood points, although how often do Toyota adds really pop up for people? I've never even received on, I only get those really short B-roll edits by Line and ON3P which I think are great fun to watch.

KravtZYour an idiot. Public radio has ADS that pay them money to advertise constantly. NS should get more ads to make more $. The Toyota vid isn't that bad man
RubberSoulive always thought it would make more sense for NS to operate as it does, but with the option to buy a membership which eliminates the ads. also you could buy it for other people like on reddit. seems like a win win to me. on the other hand, yeah who cares. that toyota ad is annoying though and definitely reduces the number of videos i watch, and why has it run so long? get some new content sheesh. no it's not a big deal but guess what, online activity is determined by second to second decisions and impulses. it's NS' and toyota's loss if they can't cater to that well enough
Mr.BishopThe part which surprises me all the time is how little video viewership drops even during an ad campaign like this. It is negligible. AdBlock rates go up a few percent, but that's about it.
The more people have been talking about a sub model the more it makes sense to me as an option.
J - $5 / year wouldn't even come close to covering the lost revenue from a core member not watching ads. Not even in the neighborhood.
It'd need to be monthly... so say like $2.99 / month for reduced ads and $7.99 for ad free. Maybe there's year-long bundles where if you buy 6 months in winter you get the additional 6 months of summer for only 50% of the price or something.
304NordMandamn dude... you're pretty lucky then 'cause I have to watch a 30 second Toyota add, THE SAME 30 SECOND TOYOTA ADD, every single fucking time I watch a video. also there's a toyota add on my screen right now. I'm sick of it.

RubberSouloh don't get me wrong, i wouldn't make the claim that on the big scale video viewership goes down too much. but i do wonder if they would start to drop if ads like this were present for prolonged periods
i'm just saying that personally ive def watched fewer vids recently. and that's my choice, and not a huge deal, but you know what bugs me the most about it? that that same video is still playing. i think that's the most annoying part about any of the less favorable ads that have been on this site, that they are around for weeks or months. seems like a serious lack of prowess by the advertisers and somewhat of a waste of their money to show the same freakin ad for so long
re: sub fees, hm well that's interesting. 8 bucks a month for no ads actually doesn't sound worth it. maybe you should keep the system as is but reward us for our service to our corporate overlords by trying to keep shitty long commercials like the toyota one infrequent :)
Dstansame for me. Watching an add every single time is ridiculous. I recognize the necessity of ads, but I feel like ads should only play once every 15 minutes or once for every 4 videos or something - that wouldn't be a difficult thing to implement. I'll click away every time I have to watch a 2nd 30 second ad in a row because creating that statistic is the only vote that really matters.
Saying that is like England before 1776 saying "What surprises me, is that we keep taxing the american colonies and they haven't broken away from us yet. The unrest is almost negligible. Smuggling goes up, but that's about it."
Just because the adds haven't reached the critical point where there's a drastic change in viewership doesn't mean that its a good idea to keep pushing towards that critical point.
Mr.BishopWhat price would it be worth it to you? And not just like bullshit... I'm talking you would actually throw your credit card down tomorrow and sign up for real. Is there a price?
Every time we ask this question people usually just say "more ads please".
Believe me both of you - its well known on our end that we have to work towards a change. This is unsustainable, and I know it. This can't keep happening.
The problem is these massive campaigns dropping in like nukes. They're great for us financially, but they blot out the sun compared to the other stuff. When we have a nice mix of skiing-focused pre-rolls its pretty rad. That is what we want.
This comes from a corporate level, where all the other websites are content ones only. So a Powder viewer isn't on there every day, they just zip in from facebook, watch one video and leave. Then they go to be pissed about ads everywhere on the internet.
I think we've put some policies in place that will help cut this issue down in the future. We're working on any ads over 15 seconds requiring a skip, as well as better ways to target so that you can watch a couple of shorter vids with only one ad.
I am really sorry about this BTW. I know we continuously get it wrong, and we're working on it.
danbrown2. is there some way to get rid of an ad if you're just trying to replay the video? sometimes when i (want to) watch a short video multiple times, the video ends and the ad starts once i attempt to replay it. that's super annoying.
RubberSoulhm, i don't know. 8 sounds too rich for my blood (i'm poor) but 5 sounds reasonable. idk enough about ad rates to know where the number would have to be for it to be worth it for you guys. it's rather complex, though, given that i add to the content of this site to some degree by being a knowledgeable NS scholar and answering skiing questions whenever i can.

MLJWasn't there talk about a special subscription service for ns? So everything that is here now stays free, but if you pay the 18 bucks a year you get a special newsletter/ new product or whatever. You could even make it 25 bucks a year so you make a bit of profit for the effort. I would pay if you made it worth it.
MLJSorry for dub post, but seeing bishops above post made me realise 3 bucks a month wont cut it. 5 would be perfectly reasonable, and if we got a buy 6 get 6 months free deal for the summer, id definitely go for it. Then for $30-40 a year( depending on whether it is just ads, or you get that new subscription thing we were talking about earlier.)
iLLbiLLy@Bishop
implement an affiliate marking program with Backcountry, REI, etc. The fact that you guys don't already have one is ridiculous. Make it public so that NS'ers know its not trickery (just be careful not to violate the TOS with the affiliate).
You could even TASTEFULLY use link injection when users mention a specific product (this means either only using exact tokenized matching on products or having mods manually make links). Or even better allow users to add products (hook into the review system) to thread posts.
If you get big enough, companies like backcountry will even offer exclusive deals and products to NS members.
Affiliate marketing has potential to generate WAY more money than adds if done correctly. I worked for a crap website that pulled in half a mill annually in its prime.
In a industry that is so focused around having the latest and greatest, you guys are really missing out. TGR is already ahead of you guys but there implementation is still not using their full potential.
Like I've said in the past (about the crap search bar), I'm available for moonlight consulting.
Mr.BishopWe already do this to a pretty large extent. Look through the entire gear guide, and notice the affiliate link encoders from multiple sources running all across the site.
Trust me when I say:
1) I REALLY know affiliate marketing.
2) I recognize that we have room to grow in this area.
3) You'd be really lucky to get 10% of the revenue out of affiliate marketing as advertising.
In a wild world where we become the single most premier spot on the entire internet for gear I wouldn't imagine affiliate making up more than 20%.
That all being said, email me - mr.bishop@newschoolers.com - I'd love to hear some ideas.
iLLbiLLysent. probably nothing revolutionary in there. Just how I would approach it if I ran NS.
john18061806I'd prefer native advertising in news and forums over a video ad that prevents me from watching content for 30 seconds.
Mr.BishopAwesome man! I'll definitely hit you up and we can both post our findings here.
One thing to note, the Affiliate Nexus tax really hit hard. Since NS is located in California legally, and TEN (our parent company) has offices around America, most affiliates have really scaled back their programs.
Anyway - gear is a great opportunity here and hopefully you and me can cook up some ideas to get some rev out of this shit.
swogerI have a feeling making people pay monthly for Newschoolers will greatly limit the amount of users in this site. A lot of people just come on to fuck around, post a little, maybe watch a video and get off. I have a feeling people won't want to bother if they had to pay.
Personally, I say bring on the 30 second just as long it isn't the same damn one over and over
loganschnurBishop, I'd put a credit card into my account tomorrow if it meant being able to watch ad-free videos, as well as support the great content producers we have here. Time for some purple-name kick backs.
El_Barto.goin to buy a Carolla, brb noobs
DingoSeanI just want to say, I miss double pits to chesty.

Eastcoastskier4Do these toyota people really think that these ads are helping.. "Hey dad I just saw this ad on NS for a prius, You better go get one!"
