Memory Card Question

Hey guys,

So I went to shoot some footage today, popped a 32 gb sandisk card into my t3i, and suddenly im getting the message "Video recording has been stopped automatically." Cant record more than 4-5 seconds at a time, and it kind of freezes once that screen shows up.

Is my card too slow? I borrowed a larger one from school, and I'm wondering if maybe it doesnt write fast enough?

Did you try reformatting it? Might just be a corrupt card

Your camera is trying to write data on the card that is more than the cards max write speed. You can either get magic lantern and turn the rate down but your footage will look like shit, or you can invest in better cards. Try searching Sandisk extremes and see how cheap you can get them. Remember that not all 32gb sd cards are the same.

Yeah, didn't really change anything. Even tried turning it down to lower quality settings.

make sure its class 10 and can go over 40 mb/s.
my 16gb sandisk extreme goes 45 mb/s and is class 10. can easily go for over 5 minutes.

Yeah I found that my camera does the same thing. But weirdly not all the time... Just randomly at times.

this happens to my sandisk 32gb extreme all the time... Would also appreciate some help. Also there are little bars that appear on the side when this does happen

A very large design flaw that's apparent in a bunch of Canon DSLRs is the buffer. It is TINY. Most cameras should be able to handle recording to a 30mb/s card, but Canons can not do so reliably. I invested in a few 45mb/s cards and I haven't had the problem since, but it's always in the back of my mind.

Yeah, this is an issue if you're using a 30mb/s card or less... I used to have these 'Transcend' cards that were really cheap class 10 cards, but they only had maybe a 20mb/s write speed. Maybe less. This would happen constantly when I had my 60D.

For canons, you really can't use a Sandisk Ultra or slower all that reliably. It has to be an Extreme or faster to really work well. I think when I had my t2i's I had Ultra cards and it was fine, but the buffer would fill pretty quickly and I still had very limited clip lengths. After about 2 minutes it would stop recording entirely. I promptly got much faster cards.
