When should I start competing?

Hi, I plan to do some big mountain comps soon, but how good do you have to be? I'm 16 years old, I've been skiing for 2 1/2 years. I'm not that great in the park, but i can do backies and 360s around the mountain. I can also drop some pretty decent cliffs and pick out some good lines. Am I good enough? SHould I practice more? When did you start competing?

Just compete for fun , there are some public contests and just join one of them with a friend and see how it turns out!

Even if you come in dead last your first few comps, it'll still be super fun and give you a great idea of what to work on. You'll likely meet some other solid skiers to ride with too.

I say compete. It will be fun no matter what. I just do the random rail jams that pop up around and i am really not outstanding. But its up to you.

If you can huck decent sized cliffs and are comfortable in gnarly terrain, you're definitely ready for the Junior Freeride Tour. It's nowhere near the level of the adult competitions. Check out juniorfreeridetour.com for info on it. Also look at http://www.freeskiers.org/rankings/past-junior-champs.html for photos/videos of winners of previous years so you can get an idea of how good the competitors are.

There's also the Tahoe Junior Freeride Series, which may be part of the Junior Freeride Tour, not sure. Check out the site anyway tahoejuniorfreerideseries.com

In 2015 for the first time there is going to be a Collegiate Freeride Series for ages 19-25. So do the Junior Freeride Tour for the next few years, then after that you can either do the Collegiate Freeride Series, or, if you're good enough, the Freeride World Qualifiers. Info on those is at freeskiers.org.

I was 15 when I did my first big mountain comp, and I wish I had started earlier. Competing makes you a much better skier, and it's really fun to be with that many people who love skiing. Just try it out, it will be fun even if you don't do well

I did my first big mountain comp this past season. If you like Big Mountain skiing then why not? What do you have to lose? You'd probably go skiing that day anyways.
