The new Whistler ad, at the very top of the page is very annoying. It's so large, that it takes up half the screen, and pushed the actual NS webpage way down, so you have to scroll down to even start reading anything.
I don't care about ads usually. I am surrounded by ads that suck way more and they don't really register anymore. Until they start loading late and surprise scrolling me as I type or try to click on stuff. Congrats Whistler, you got my damn attention.

It's an ad for one of the sickest resorts in North America, promoting an online film festival which features two NS members as participants. Not to mention, campaigns like this allow us to continue growing the site, our content programs ,and everything else NS related.

The issue is that the add takes up the top 20% of the screen before NS as a website even starts. Its disoriented when your used to coming to a site and seeing things in certain places.
A better design would be to put it at the top of the content, where it would blend in and seem more natural. Although... NS is a pretty ugly site in general (especially since the new forums rolled out) so I guess it doesn't matter that much.

Its a hard balance between design and ad real estate that catches people's attention.
These units are more aggressive I agree, but its a balance.
Yes, NS is relatively ugly. That is kind of its character.
