Hunting Season Hype Thread

This thread is for the hunters of NS, if you're against hunting don't bother posting your shit in here :)



So hunting season just kinda started here in CT... Early season that is, early goose season in CT's North Zone is from Sept. 2-30, then re-starts with ducks in early October... It's also squirrel season too so i might try to blast some of those limb-rats...

Geese aren't really here yet just a few flocks here and there, hopefully some more come in numbers before the 30th

Just bought my firearms hunting license, HIP permit, and federal+state migratory bird stamp. Ready to bag my first ducks/geese this fall+winter.

Anyone one NS ready to hunt this year?


I took my hunter safety course around mid-fall last year so only got to hunt for waterfowl a little. Here's a pic of my spot, I know this year i'll whack 'em

.Hugo.I dont know what kind of grouse you have but different species live in different habitats. Around here they are in very thick woods/brush so it kind of gives off the illusion that they are fast because you get such small windows to shoot at them. But yes they really are not that fast, especially on the ground


correct. in the picture of my dogs there are both ruffed and spruce grouse which are the most common in my neck of the woods and both live in a similar environment to what you described. we also have sootys and sharp-tailed as well as the three ptarmigan species. and when i lived go to the states i hunt sage grouse, quails, and chukars. both of the later being much faster in my opinion. im not trying to nay say or start any debates in here, so i'll leave it at that. i enjoy hunting a tremendous amount and im glad to see other people here sharing that stoke.

Hey we are all hunters and I respect your opinion and you obviously have some skills and know what your talking about. Here in PA though, the woods are super thick, tons of undergrowth and tons of hardwoods. If I jump a ruffed grouse at 10 or 15 yards I have maybe....maybe 3 to 4 seconds to get a shot off if I'm lucky. Hell no they aren't as fast as a turkey running on the ground but when they spook and fly straight up they are like a damn rocket taking off.

Anyway, congrats on your successful hunt, that's more birds than I've ever got in one day for sure. I'd love to hunt alaska sometime actually. Help me out and show me around when I make it up there. My step father is building a cabin in Delta Junction right now.

Only thing to hunt in CT right now is limb rats so I've been filling up my freezer with some of these.... Waterfowl/small game/upland bird/deer/turkey all starts in a few week or sooner!!

I was stuck in the hospital last year with some respiratory problems and wasn't able to go up deer hunting. So they decided to make a snowman to replace me. Apparently they got frustrated with the location of Mr. Snowman and ran him over with the 4-wheeler the next day.

You dont just kill it and leave it there dead because its enjoyable to just kill animals. Its more of a sport in that it allows someone to take part in something that has been done since the beginning of man. There is nothing vile in that. Its "natural".

Was a disappointing day duckhunting, got op at 230am to get our spot and someone was already there.... so we had to find another one on the lake and there wasnt much to choose from. Got these an eclipse drake and hen mallard right as the clock hit 644 (shooting time starts). Nothing the rest of the morning. People on our spot we wanted slaughtered em. Kinda pissed off. There were a lot of birds flying around though and a lot were sky high migrators. Goin back out in the morning

Are they also really stupid? Grouse up here in the Cariboo interior are beyond clueless. If I see one next to the brush on the trail ill just shoot them from my quad with the engine running... Even if another Grouse is close by the shot he wont even get startled. I really like their meat too but god damn they are one stupid bird

Me and my cousin use to drive around on our 4-wheeler's and try to run them over. Never actually got one but we could get about 5 feet away most of the time and shoot them with the .17

They just think nothing can see them and that they blend into their surroundings, which they really do a pretty good job of. You can drive/walk by one 10 feet away a bunch of times and they wont move. But usually if you stop near them for a little bit is when they'll jump. At least in my experience.

I actually know a guy who is colorblind, and he can pick them out like no one i've ever seen. We sat there for 30 seconds one time while he was pointing one out and I just could not find it

Was a good fucking morning. Got our spot this time and shot our limit of 12 ducks and got a pretty good variety of birds as well.

Thats what the kayak is for. We pull it behind the bigger boat to the spot. Its super klutch

This weekend it was just 2 of us, but we've had up to 6 before. It took us quite a while to get our limit today, about 3 hours. Didnt see a ton of birds but the ones that came in close enough we toasted every time.

Im looking at getting a new shotgun, anyone have recommendations? It needs to be semi-auto and shoot 3.5 in shells and not be a stoeger. Ive only ever had benelli so i know all about the sbe2 and super franchi, looking for other brands from people with experience using them

hmmm i dont think ill be much help here but ill put in my 2cents. I have been using one version or another of the remington 870 since i started hunting. they are just so versatile (bird hunting to bear protection quickly) and reliable out in the bush. We won a semi-auto weatherby from the jr duck stamp raffle one year and holy tits that thing is sexy. The only thing is that it shoots 3" instead of 3.5", and im not sure if they make anything that takes 3.5, but shit that gun is what i imagine driving a ferrari to be like.

i sent a message asking a buddy of mine, who would have some better insight for you, i'll let you know what he says when he gets back to me.

Thanks, ive shit a few 870s and they are definitely solid do it all guns, just not what im looking for right now as i have a similar model already. Based on the way you love that weatherby ill take a look at those though.

Also for some reason my phone auto corrected super vinci to super franchi, weird.

I bought a Browning 7mm off a family friend a few years back for $400. It was made in Belgum in the late 60's and he got it from a flea market many years back for like $600. I went to the Library once and found a book that stated the value's of different guns and it was estimated at around $2200 given it's age and condition. So I think I did pretty good. The gun in the picuture is not mine but the same thing.

Hell yeah! gonna be using it a lot this fall! I might use this instead of the .22 for limb rats hahhaha.

But yeah, waterfowl, quail, deer, and turkey will all tried to be targeted with this gun this year!

Having been reminded about it yesterday on here I got this wild idea that maybe it would be wise of me to clean my 7mm due to the fact it's been sitting in the safe for 13 months. Then one thing lead to another and now everything is clean!

And I just kinda wanted to show off my stuff.

Just got permission to hunt 30+ acres of private land, on top of the public land I hunt, ON TOP of the super private land that I can hunt because of the gun club I belong too. hopefully I have a good fall/winter.

Squirrel starts this Saturday again YAY hahaha, already got 4 in my freezer.

i've been doing a lot of work with my friends puppy(springer spaniel) since i have been watching him, he has a great little nose but he is such a timid dog that im not sure if hes really going to cut it as a bird dog. he bumps into things with his head down and if they make any noise he freaks out and pees himself the whole way back to me.

in other news, it is nice to have a full freezer again, my father got a huge bull moose a few weeks ago and i just talked to him today and he said he got a nice big elk( he is hunting in idaho right now). i cant wait to get some of that meat home, elk meat is delicious.

I hate to say that I didn't get out much this year again. I said I was going to but my school work became pretty overwhelming. I would like to think that getting a job at gander mountain in hunting and firearms kinda makes up for it in a way though.
