Why do skiers make solo projects?

every skier who becomes "the shit" seems to follow suite... - not gonna name drop.

what happened to collective riding, hanging with your crew and producing a bonfire instead of just a campfire.


do skiers dislike their crew so much they need to do "their own thing"? is it for monetary gain?

why?

no hate, just curious.

i think the general feel is that you have so much more freedom. You're not constrained to a 2 minute section or anything. I know for guys like clayton he was always heavily involved in editing etc, but for others it may well not be the case, having your own project allows you to not only take control of skiing but also creative control swell.

You do realise that just because your project only features you, it doesn't mean you obtained the shots on your own? Most likely far from it. It also doesn't mean that you always ski alone, also very far from it. I think you have failed to understand how video segments are produced, hence the slightly uninformed and assumption based question.

i think you failed to grasp the obvious, son. I've been around enough urban shoots to know it takes a bunch of people to bang out shots. My question remains, why cut out everyone your with to have your own "artistic direction".

Yah, if you watch the Wallisch Project and Partly Cloudy, most of the shots are in the same places

To add on to everyone else, you can also film more. Given that your filmer either travels with you or you have multiple others film. Most pros only film a couple weeks a season, especially if they are competing or have a job that ties them down. If they are traveling around and can't meet up with their traditional film crew they can probably meet up with others and still produce shots that they wouldn't have been able to.

More creative control, they can make the movie exactly how they want to and it can more efficiently convey the style/feel that they are going for. At least that's what I always thought.

I think it's because through making solo projects it's easier for them to get a sponsor. The more they're free to move the more they'll get notice.

Did you even read my reply? And do you remember your own OP? You asked whether or not they "hated" their own crew so much, and I pointed out that they most likely obtained most of their shots with their crew, at least some homies. You claim to be aware of this, but then you pretty much made your original question invalid.

To have a good film you have to get some sort of main vibe staying the same from the first to the last segment. Sure they have their own particular vibes but they all go in the same general direction. This direction might suit more or less some rider in a crew so by getting their own personnal project they don't have to care about fitting in the general direction of the movie they can focus on showing their skiing the way that suit em best.

If you take Henrik and phil, since they started B&E they really developed unique style and with the trailer of their solo project that they just droped, it seems that their own style is even more distinct from anybody else. Would you really imagine the shot from Phil's trailer in less movie ? IMO it would not fit very well.
