Turner. Here's an article on it from Bruce Arthur. I'm inclined to agree with him and most of the people in this thread (w/all due respect of course, Dingo) in that although Levenson's comments were insensitive, they're more pragmatic than anything. But race relations are not my forte and I don't mean to offend anyone in saying that, I just mean that this guy could have done worse.
That's the thing, of course he could have done worse. He did say something that was non PC to the point where some folks might be up in arms over the situation.
Does he deserve to be crucified here? or would he deserve to be had these emails come out without his own voluntary admission? no, absolutely not.. but it is to be said that any pointing of the finger at social constructs like race and class shouldn't be said on record.
I heard something about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar taking Levenson's side today on the matter. I don't think anyone's calling him a racist or anything, I sure am not, and I doubt anyone with half a brain is, but it did open up some interesting dialogue, that's for sure - mainly pertaining to race and class within a business and consumer setting. I'm interested to see how this all transpires.

Aside from what Levenson said, the real reason the Hawks fail to bring in attendance is because they perpetually suck. It's the same reason teams like the Warriors and the Bullets/Wizards had issues with attendance for so long.
It wasn't because those cities have a bunch of black people, and they were scaring away the white minorities who were now living in the 'burbs from coming to games (both aforementioned cities have a majority black population, incidentally), it's because the product was garbage and the only people who were passionate enough to spend money on it just happened to be the "poorer" race and intercity class groups. Atlanta hasn't won their division since they traded away Dominique Wilkins TWENTY YEARS AGO (who they traded when they were in first place, and he was their leading scorer - in the middle of the friggin season - talk about the dumbest) and it's been at least a decade since guys like Mutumbo were running the court shaking his finger in the face of people as he hacked balls out of the air. They haven't been noteworthy since.
So, instead of worrying about white cheerleaders and playing Lynard Skynard rather than Ying Yang Twins and Akon, they should have been focusing on putting a team together that could make the playoffs without a losing record like many of the lower seeded eastern clubs have done since Shaq first put on a Laker uniform...
