I have a motor bolted on to the side of a broken generator and would like to use it for a winch, I understand all the bits and pieces to build a winch but will this motor work?

I don't know much about building winches, but I learned from a friend who tried to build one that unless you can vary the speed significantly on the motor (variable something or other), you're going to have a bad time. You need to be able to start with a very slow pull and accelerate to your desired speed, or else it's going to be impossible to hold on.

Use a motorcycle to tow you like nitro circus did on that jump into the lake.

a straaten horizontal drive shaft will work. a motor that came off a pressure washer is your best bet, lawn mower will not work without doing some HUGE mods anything with 5hp or more will give you enough pull
source: built one out of my old go kart motor
