saskskierAnyone else follow it? It's a pretty intense sail boat race around the world and it starts October 4 in Spain. On average they are hitting 22.5 knots (42km/h) in a 65ft sail boat in the middle of the ocean which is pretty ridiculous.

I've never sailed before (joys of growing up on the prairies) and really don't know anything about it, but my dad spent about a year and a half on a sailboat in the south pacific (New Zealand, Fiji, etc) when he was 19/20 and as a result, I've always had an interest in it.

KravtZNormal sailing SUCKS. That volvo race looks pretty insane though crazy stuff. But normal sailing is beyond boring. My buddy has a 65 ft sailboat his dad bought a few summers back. Space is laid out really weird on a sailboat compared to a power boat. Goes to fast to swim while your moving but to slow to enjoy the ride. You stare at your landmark for hours waiting to get there while power boats blaze by you. Only redeeming quality is you can just drink and eat all day. Anyone who has sailed and then went on a yacht never goes back to sailing

slamdunkI have theory that if you built a sturdy traditional wooden yacht, you wouldn't be able to sail as fast, but you may just win the race, because these super light modern carbon fibre boats aren't seaworthy, most of them break at some point in the race and get delayed.
Whereas the slow but steady approach might just work!

The fastest they ever went was about 10 knots (a little less than half the speed of the VOR boats) and he said it was terrifying.

I don't think it's often the actual hull that breaks, but they seem to go through masts and sails. The boats are definitely seaworthy, but they also take a brutal beating. I mean they are travelling almost 40,000 miles in open ocean.

CamembertWell leg zero was interesting.. Last team that started training wins (by 10sec). What was up with Team Campos / Spain? They finisht 7.5 hours behind the number 6 that was half an hour behind the number one?! Oh and still no big sponsor for them?

omnidataI remember when I was going with a crew to sail a rather sizeable ship (100+ feet, name will not be disclosed) from Norway to the Mediterranean in march. Besides me they had another new guy in the crew. I arrived with my full Musto gear, Spinlock vest, etc.. all he had were a pair of bermudas and flip-flops.


He stayed inside for the entire trip complaining how the sea wasn't nice and blue.

CamembertNot shure if this is discussed but I'm not shure if I like this AIS racing. When in reach of their AIS system they follow each others moves all the time resulting in very safe racing, no risks are taken.. Problem is they need the AIS system to track courses of other vessels.

Laurent.We all know what happened when some ladies decided to think independently.

They should just restrict acces to the system for the teams.

CamembertDongfeng must be cursed or something. Every leg they have problems. Offcourse the mast breakage was a big one be before that and now again they have problems. Now their fresh water maker is broken after one day and they have to use a manual water maker wich sucks balls because it takes a lot of time a day to make enough water for the whole crew.
I think it takes an hour to make 4 to 5 liters of water, a crew of 9, not shure how much fresh water they need a day but damn this sucks for them..
